S. C. Kendall say e some very
true and suggestive' things about
" The Bey, John" in the April MT&
ber of Scribner's. We loot° is fol-
lows
John is • young. His tastes are
-unformedt His' feelings are very
fax froin being refined. In fact he
is a little gross in his sympathiee.
lie wants atnusement. Every bone
in his body aches for recreation, -for
play, fun,laughter. He does not
caxe—be never been taught i to
care ---what the fun is, if it will only
give relief to the fidget that stings
'hin3. Not at all iefined, he will go
for what he wants where others go.
And going where others go, he finds
the hunger of his nature coarsely
met—just as tainted meat will , fill
the hunger of 'a starving man—in
the low revelry, vile stories, unclean
mirth of drinking-cellers and saloon.
The,boy does not discriminate very
closely, and to the longing of his
crude appetite the entertainment of
these places is infinitely better than
illy he ever could find in that place
:which he has been taught to speak
of as home. For eating and sleep-
-lug and get -Una; his clothes mended,
be feels that no place can be eve'
to tt Christian home, but for a god
time, for passing a dull evening
hour, for leaining something new,
for words of cheer, for professions of
sympathy, for those genid. ways
-which a boy' does love, and which
any boy but Uriah Heep must love,
John will tell even. the- minister to
kis face that home is nothing to a
street corner, or a billlard-room with
• the attachment of a beer -Shop.
Well, by and by, just before the
clock strikes ten, the father wakes
fione his doze, the spectacles falling
and the paper sliding upon the floor,.
and, looking round with a bewilder-
ed gaze, asks, "Where is John r'

To the,Editor of the Ilaron Expoeitor. '
MR. Seeroa,--I see by a late issue of
your paper that a person signing himself
"Ratepayer, and one who signed the
• petition' I referred to, has thought fit to
show his love of falsehood and wrong by
pretending to prove my letters false. My
object in my first was sympathy with
the-ritepayers, and not ire against thena,
as the i would-be critic presumes. ' My
*object in this is to show that what 1
itated in my first was true, as many
persons sign petiticrna 'without knowing
the •reakin why they do so, and in the
case referred: to not ten persons were ac-
quainted with the 1natter. -
Mr. 'Critic appears to be well acquaint-
ed with me rb-ut I cannot tell who he is.
He says I ain a wOrthy person; then he
says that I make false statements ; next
he -calls we a friend. If he is a friend I
know nothing of it. He states Itold a
falsehood in stating the Council was the
plaintiff ; he says the Qheen is the
-plaintiff, and in the latter -part of his
letter suppoies me akin to the plaintiff
in cunning. 11 am no connection of him
or the Queen.. In the next place he
leads us to believe he received pay for
writing as he says, ‘-' I wrote gratuitous-
ly." -: if he writes false statements for
money he might have saved himself the
trouble of telling_us. Be would as soon
bow the knee to Baal zi,s to Beelzebub,
as money' Might induce him to do either,
and. I dicl not infer that any person was
• the iraage of Baal. He would also wish
us to think if he is not akin to the de-
fendent. He ,would like to be, • as he
sold his birth:tight for a mess of pottage.
But ai he can 'publish .the petition we
• h.
may infer him- to be t e defendant, or
the one who is endeavoiing to become an
intiMate relative of the defendant. I
stated the defendant held. the land on
the pretence that the mistake was in the
original survey. Mr, Untie says the
stakes ha-ve been proven to as far back as
1850. .That 1 does not contradict my
statement with regard to the overplus.
Be says it was divided between the five
lots.; Now, the ownet of lot 20 states he
only received six feet and the stakes are
to be -seen' yet. •There were six rods
overptus, and giving six feet to , each of
the four lots, would leave fourlrods to
:better instraction, he is out practic-
ing our modern-' plan of training
himself up ia the way he likes to go,
laving me thought that when he is
-old he will care to depart froin it.
But the father, who has inquired
for his boy rubs his eyes, looks out
into the darkness, and listens; but
he hears hire not, He wishes that
Lis boy would not go out so of nights;
• but then he does go out. He won-
• ders that John cannot sit down at
tome like Other boys. What other
boys? And then, with a very feel -
remark that, "If John does not
do better and become steady, he will
mike a miserable shirk of himself,"
the father goes to bed. The mother
waits till her boy comes. By and
by he does come in,—his restless-
ness blewn off, the uneasy fidget of
the early evening spent in relax,
ations which, of some kind, a boy
must have—and then at last the
lishitie is quiet. Sleep and rest pre-
pare the househeld for another day
and evening like these.
And when that other evening
comes, out goes the boy' again., and
the tether again wonders, and wishes
-
that john would be steady andstay
• at home, and very ,feelingly predicts

I am not prepared to say how the mis-
