Tne First India Rubber Shoes.
The histoiy of the introduction
of India, rubber overshoes is not- a
little curious. We mustrely on the
Seientific American for its authen-
ticity. Before 1821 the rubber had
been imported only in the fortn of
cutiosities, such as crocodiles, tur-
tles, and other objects, A wap.&tin at that time brought, among
nong other devices, some robber
wrought in the shape of small 511008,
and gave them as a present to an in-
telligent boy. They were closed
over the top, and our hero cut them
open to find only some clay within
in the forms of lasts. His next de-
sire was to put them on his feet,
but as they would not stretch
enough, he -used boiling water to
ften them, and then succeeded in
his purpose. To color them, he
used mk, which soonwashed off,
but finally hit upon. the plan. of
smoking them up in the chimney.
He then had complete the firsr pair
of india, rubber shoes ever treed in
this country, and his euxess was
the bEginning of a business which.
has now immense proportions,
A Useful Invention.
An ingenious Ca lifornian has, af-
ter several years of labor and an ex-
pense of many thousand dollars,
succeeded in producing a machine
for grading railroad tracks, turn
pikes and other embankments. It
consists of $L common plow, with a.
somewhat extended TO ould-board,
- which may be raised or lowered at
pleasure. A circular table or wheel,
twelve feet in diameter, inclines at
an angle of twenty-five degrees
toward the plow. Within the outer
edge of the wheel is .arr-anzed a
series of scraper -shaped buckets,
with ecljerstable bottoms. To avoid
ftiction, this u or table is geared
to a centre shaft, at the top of -which
is an attachment, with rods leading
to each bucket, for the purpose of
emptyiog. This circular tal,le re-
ceives its motion, by rmeans of a
driving wheel similar' to that used
in a iaelping machine. Thele is a
steering apparatus at the rear. To
do the work thoroughly it takes six-
. teen horses, four abreast. It is
.. claimed for the 'machine that it will
do the work of 125 men, with
shovels.
Marriage with a Deceased
Wife's Sister.
The subject of marriage with a
deceased wife's sister having been
l.ro tight before the Geller d Assembly
of the Canada, Presbyterian C h urch,
which met in Toronto in June, 1870,
the following resolutiou was adopt-
. ed, viz.: "That having regard to
the importance of the RI bject brought
hefore the General Assembly—one
on which the Confession. of Jfaith
gives no uncertain sound--declar
ing, on Scriptural grounds there re-
ferred to, that marriitges within cer-
rain degrees of affinity, incl tiding
the relationship of a man to the sis-
ter of his deceased wife, are forbid-
den by the Divine Law, --and can
never be made lawful by any law of
man or consent of parties, the As-
sembly sees no sufflaient ground for
piodirying the the ecclesiastical rule
of its communion in this particular,
which is also in harmony with the
civil law of Great Britain. But,
willing to treat with respect the
difficulties of some, among whom
questions have arisen as to the rele-
vancy or sufficiency of the Scriptural
grounds on which the prohibition
of rcarriage within the specific de-
gree of affiaity brought under notice
is held to rest, agree to ailpoin!-,
cxmernittee to (rive its consideration
to the suLject, with the view of
'elucidating the scriptural basis of
said law, and showing, as far as may
be, to the parties aggrieved by our
rules of discipline, that these do not
re&.-, on slight or arbitrary grounds ;
said committee to report at next As-
sembly." The co In M if tee reported
at the late meeting., this month, cit-
ing the Seriptural authority for the
position of the church on this mat-
ter, which was sustained.

In the course of an address to the

Exportation of C nadian Cattle.
One of the mos valuable ship
meats of cattle tha has ever taken
place. from .Canada, says the Mont-
real Vazette, has ju t been made by
Mr. Cochrane, of orriptori.: The
purchaser is Mr. G. Reed, Of
Portland, Oregon, wio has reeeedy
purclaased some thousands of acres
of land in: that State with a view df
cattle -breeding on a large scale.
The sale. comprised eventeen short
horned animals, m "stly imported
stock, one Jersey co and calf, and
twenty-two Cotswol sheep. As an
evidence -of the unpt eedente4 suc-
cess achieved by M . Cochrane, we
may mention that has alsoL sold
to a noblenaan in ,ngland, 'eight
head of animals; "five bei▪ ng calves;
for the fabulous um of 4,300

is certainly a new pi ase in this de

Mr. Oncliran,--by hi skill and en-

conferring substantia benefits upon
