By the returns of the. elections which took place on Tuesday hist, in the State of New. York, it appears that the Republican gains have been coitsiderablr. It is alitkitned that they will have a large majority both in the Senate and Assembly- of the State Legislature.- The notorious "Boss" Tweed, notwithstanding the. serious charges- hanging over him and the general indignation felt against the " ring," of which he has been principal Member, has s been elected Senator -from the Fonrth Distfict by a great majority.. This resutt was expected from the charac- ter of the constituency, which con- sists of electors of the lowest class: In Severaldistricts the 'votinghas been very close, and the results were not decisively known. In the upper parts of the city the reaction against , Tammariy is said to have been per- fectly overwhelming; although as Tweed's election shows the old cor- rupt system has still a strong body of adherents. In the Supreme Court elections, Judge LedWith has been defeated , he having, it is said, fait - ed to reverse the January vote. . . . • BIRTHS.'
