twenty-eight bushela was 35 minutes.

nirkes a considerable d.iffrenc in tavor
of the. machine.
Naw CROSsING.—Messrs. Lee & Swit
zeta have erected, at their own expense,
a crossing from the front of their store to
the west side of Main Street. This will
be quite a convenience for easterners
visiting their store, and will no doubt
prove to them a remunerative invest-
ment.
LECTURE. -Th e iev. Mr. MeDi arm id,
McKillop, delivered a temperance
lecture, in the Temperance Hall of this
village last night. The lecture was de-
livered under the auspices of Huron
Temple, I.. 0; of Good Templars. We.
hall refer to it at greater length next
week.
MAN.TTOBA. WEEAT.—Mr. William
Small, of Winnipeg, has sent us a sample
-wheat which took the first prize at the
late Agricultural Exhibition there, which
was the flak in that Provinee. The
-wheat is a fair sample, and bears out
what has been claimed for Manitoba as a
(wheat growing country: It can be -seen
.at the EXPOSITOR office.
MISS CARROLL'S CONCERT -The cone
.cert given last Friday evening, in the
Town Hall, by the singing class under
the tuition of Miss Carroll was a marked'
success. The audience was very large,
and the entc rtainment was such as to re-
flect the highest credit on Miss Carroll,
as a teacher, and lter pupils for the pro-.
ficiency shown. We learn that it is
Miss Carroll's intention to give another
-concert in the course of a week Or two.
PUBLIC MEETING. — The adjourned
meeting for the purpose of taking into
considerationithe propriety of granting
a bonus ta aid in establishing manufac-
tories in SP-afortb, was held on Monday
evening last. The attendance, although
not nearly so large as it should have
been, was pretty fair. A resolution
was passed requesting the Council to of-
fer the free use of $8,000 for a period of
ten years to the first responsible parties
who will agree to establish aticl carry ou
a manufactory which woeld employ
within one year atter its commencement,
not fewer than: fifty workineu. The
Council will take action on the matter
at their next meeting.
ACCIDENTS.—Mr. Robert Andrew Mc-
Elroy, son of Mr. John McElroy, of
Roxboro, McKillop, cut his foot pretty
aeverely on Friday evening, the 25th
inst., the axe lodging in the foot a little
below the instep. He is doing well. -A
daughter of Mr. Andrew Go.venlock,
live years of age, broke her arm badly on
Wednesday. the 18th inst. A severe in-
flamipationaansued, the break beiug just
abdve the elbow joint. Theehild is now
inprovina.--A daughter of the late
ItichareSparling, Seaforth, six years of'
age, fell from a swing one day last week
and fractured her arm in the neighoed of
the -elbow joint. She is getting along
well.
PoISONED.—The family of, Mr. Simon
Powell had a very narrow 'escape from
being poisoned on Wednesday last. It
seems that daring last summer Mr.
Powell had been using helabore for the
. purpose of destroying insects in his gar-
den, and a portion of which had been
left unused. This had been placed in a
pepper box and left in the cupboard. On
Wedneaday Mr. Powell had got a new
servant girl, who in preparing potatoes,
for breakfast took this pepper box and
sprinkled its contents upon the potatoes
supposing it -to be pepper. After tasting
the potatoes_she coneaided that they had
not had euough and. gave them another
(Lae. The pntatoes thus seasoned were
served uti for breakfast, but fortunately
-only four members of the family partook -
of them, viz: the eldest daughter, the
ise.cond son a clerk in the gore, and the
servant girl. Shortly after breakfast all
these became violently ill, and had it not
1./..teu for timely mid efficient medical aid
they wou:d all undoubtedly have fallen
victims to this serious mistalie. As it is
Low -ever, they are now all out of danger,
and are speedily recovering.
TEACHERs' ASSOCIATION.—The next
meting of the Teachers' Association,, for
this County, to be held in Gliriton, on
the 3rd and 4th of November, premises
to be more than usually interesting.
While Saturday's proceedings will be of
little interest to -those outside of the pro-
fession, the programme for Friday even-
ing prothises a rieh treat for the general
public. Excellent vocal and instrument-
al music has been provided. for the omit:,
sam, and addresaes will be delivered by
M r. Milier, President of the Association,
Mr. Matheson, of the New Era, and Mr.
Dewar, Inspector of Schools for the
North Riding. H. Hale, Esq., of Clin-
ton, will make some remarks on Educa-
tion, -accompanied by illustrative read-
ings from the authorized text books. As
an amateur reader Mr. Hale has few
avails, and his remas Ica will certainly be
hitt:resting and instraettve. We hope
that every teacher in the (Imlay will

PLOWING MATCH. lowing match
under the auspices of the Iibbert Plow-
ing Association, came off n Wednesday
last, on- the farm of. Mr. Rohert Hamil-
- ton, near Grornarty. The 1fay was most
favorable, and -the. attendance of plow-
men and spectaAoks was very large. rhe
mita, upon the Whole, was a remark-
ably successful one, and was not only
a credit to the Township but to the
County as well., The work done was
very good, considering the unfavorable
state -of the growl 1, which was much too
'dry for real nice plowing to- be . made.
The directors of the Association may
well feel-pleaSed nd proud at the mark-
ed success -which has attended -their ef-
forts on the occasien-of theiv first plow-
.
ing match. We ',understand that the
President and Sedretary of the Associa-
tion; Messrs: Rea( ing and Hodgins, are
-especially clesery ng of praise -for their
ineefatigable exertions to -secure the sue -
cess of the match. After- the
judges had finished their labcrs,
the names - of the successful plow-
men weep announced, when three
hearty cheers were given for the &ore!.
tary and President, and thre-e for the
Queen-. , Many were the words.
of congratulation expressed upon'
the success which had attended the first
-match, and equally numerous' were the
well wishes expr ssed for the future
prosperity of the Sciety. We sincerely
trust that our Hie ert friends may have
many mote such silccessful matches, and
their useful 4ssociation may long
continue to flourish, and that it 'May

The Danger of Seaforth fr m
Fire.
To the Editor of the Iluron. Expositor
SIR, -When I take a retrospective
view of the innumerable fires which are
taking place throughout all parts of the
country, I cannot but reflect on the
tet • e at danger that our own flourishing
village is subjected to. And shoul I a
fire break out, bonsider what a, disastrous
event it would be to cutl down such a
business place as Seaforth. I think it
would be truly advisable to call a pu lie
meeting immediately, for ;the purpos of
electing a few vigilant, 'watchful, nd
trustworthy persons to keep sentry t. ur-
ing the nocturnal hours, ad 1 also th uk
that there might be ample means s b-
