THE HURON EXPOSITOR.
Opening the North-West.
leeent editorial in the Tribune
(dyes some figures indicating the.
ta
progress of that characteristic Am-,
arican enterprise, the Northern pa-
eiffe Railroad. On the 1st of July,
1870, the company began work
through an unbroken wilderness
west of Lake Superior. Now the
fertile lands west of the Mississippi
have been reached. The grading is
completed to the Red River, and
three miles'of iron per day is being
put down by the track -layers. Eittly
in Novemeer the cars will- be run-
ning 250 miles across the state of
Minnesota. A contract has been
closed for the completion of the road,
between the Red River and the
Missouri, 200 miles, by the 1st of
July next. The opening of this di-
vision is expected to give new life to
the mining business of Montana,
which already, remote as it is, pro-
duces a greater amount of gold and
silver than any other State or Terri-
tory in the Union. Other branches
on the eastern elope are being push-
ed forwal-d. neantime, on the Pa-
cific slope 65 miles is under con-
atruction, upon which the iron is
hainglaid. It iexpeeted that with-
in two years from the beginning of
the work, --that is, by July 1st,
1872 —the corporation will .have
completed in all no less than 975
miles of rail way.
The great results at whieh the en-
terprise aims, it is hardly needful to
tell our readers. Vast regions of
eountry, of great and varied fertility,
are to -be opened ; a new trans -con-
tinental route is to be established,
for which a gain of five hundred
miles ia distance; compared to its
rivals, is claimed ; and a closer link
is to be established in the tie be-
tween the old Orient and the new
Occident. The vigot with which
the work is being pushei. seems
commensurate with the greatness
aud difficulty of the undertaking.

Upon the announcement being
made in the Stock Exchange in
London that the Great Western
Railway Company would declare a
dividend at the rate et 5-1- per cent.

advanced to X20 5s. The Great
Western stock is £20 10s., so that

The gradual advance of the yalue of
tap securities of the company is due
to the increasing traffic, and the ad-
mirable condition of the permanent

since the stuck -eras only worth
from sixty to seventy cents on the

dollar. The adoptioof the narrow
gauge, 4 feet 81- inches in place of
5 feet, 6 Mabee; thus enabling the
cars of the New York Ceneral and
Erie Roads to pass over the -Great

point in the commercial history of
the company. We corignitulae the

SALT LAKE, Oct. 20.—The. court
was occupied all day with the
i Hawkins adultery case. The cross-
' examination of Mrs. Hawkins eli-
Icited ni °thing naterially new. She
testified- that- Hawkins gave no
reason for taking other' women for
sviyes, except that she .had had her
day, 4nd it, was proper be should
have Some one else. She said that
she hd burne him seveu children at
t
the ti;t1e he took another wife. The
defence cffered no testimony except
to prove the marriage of Hawkine
with his second and third wives.
Gen. Maxwell spoke for the proseeu-
don, assuming that the defence
would rest upon the plural marriage
as being part of a religious faith, and
argue+ that polygamy was a direct
violas -ion of both the ecclesiastical
and summon law. Mr. Fitch eon -
el uded at, a late hour for the defence.
He cOntended that Mr. Hawkins,
being a Moimon, bad no intention
of committing a crime, arid that the
intendon was essential to the con-
viction, that there was no law against
polygamy when he took his second
wife, and that he could not be guilty
of adultery, because he was legally
married to the women, according to
the usages and customs of the Mor-
mon church. The U. S. Attorney,
i].
Mr. • askin, will sum. up this evi-
dence!, after, which •the case will go
to the Jury. A number of addition-
al arrests for lascivious cohabitation
have been made. .
SALT LAKE, Oct. 21.—The Jury
in Mr. Hawkins' case came in last
night with a sealed verdict, which,
on being opened this morning, he
was found to be gnilty. The °oort

The Irish Question.
Ireland is not actually a Republic,
but would like to be. Mr. Butt,
Q. C., was returned to parliament,
from Limerick, without opposition,
es an advocate for the Government.
Mr. Gladstone met this challenge in
his speech at Aberdeen, by saying
that he should be happy to discuss
the matter with Mr. Butt in _the
House, tett that, whatever the argu-
ments mii.,Tht be, the Union was in
fixed fact, and could_ never be ab-
olished. It must and shall he pre-
served. So Mr. Butt must argue
mg -ail -let a foregone conclusion. The
Nationalist papers are very violent
in denouncing this deelsration of
war against Ireland.'"f he Weekly
News says: ,
A Scotch audience were the
first to hear from Mr. Gladstone's
lips the declarations which stamp
him as the enemy of the people of
Ireland. Bitter, uutruthful, and
malieious, his speech may be taken
as a certain indication that from him,
at least, the people of Ireland need
look neitherthfor sympathy nor jus-
tice, andat the sooner they make
up their minds to treat him as arelent-
less opponent the better. So be it;
we accept the cenclusions forced
tipon us, and the Irish people will
slat shrink from the obligations it
antatils. From this tisne forward

New York Horse Market.
Tuesday, Oct. 23, 1871,-
Accumu1ation of stock, inclemency of
the weather, she Chicago calamity, with
with its more or less damaging bearing
upon the interests of almost every
business in the city, all combined to ex-
ert a depressing influence throughout the
past week upon the condition of the
.114n -se trade. -
IThe demand for work and business
hOrses of every description has been
litnited and, confined almost entirely to
urgent wants on the city car and stage
lines. whila for pleasure horses there
were but very few buyers, and. even
these, so unuenally discriminating in their
views, that through the prevalent
scarcity of choice stock transactions have
become next to impossible.
The annexed price list is a recaptela-
t oii of the average figures at which
t ansactions were concluded during the
eek, but we are safe in assuming that
t at the present tendency of the market
i utooward the lower range of the figures
ted:
Canada farm an& business horses, from
-125 to $200 per head.
Railroad and stage horses, from $155
o $t75 per head.
Common Western work horses, from
5185 to $235 per head.
Prime truck horses, from $300 to $350
er head.
Light driving horses (15.1 hands high),
$500 to $6u0 per pair.
Light driving horses (over 15.2 hands
high), $800 to $1,000 per pair.
Prime carriage h3rses (16 hands and
Over), $1,200 to $2,000 per pair. 1
Very stylish, well matched coach
horses (15.2 hands and over.). $2,500 to
§3,000 per pair.
The attendance at the annual sale of
blood horses at Jerome Park was only
moderate: Out of 19 lots offered, eight
were bought in by their owners, and two
received no bids at all The lots sold
-were knocked down, the :owest $120,
-the -highest $805. The horse and car-
riage auction sale in the city presented no
feature. The whole stock of a livery
stable was disposed of, on tbe 12th inst.,
at pretty fair prices.
