Samuel Caldwell, resides in Illinois. • Between these two there was a very close alliance of friendship, and the other brothers -appear to have paired • off in like manner. Two _years ago • he received a sun -stroke, which i7effect.ed his mind, and application • was mede to the court to appoint a guardian for him, bat the physicians' refused to make the necessary cer- tificate. He afterward went to _Mis- • souri on •business, and thence wan: dered to New Orleans, where be was without means. • elt appe les that While in New •(Means he made efforts to procure funds from Colum- bus with which to return home, but from some unaccou ntaol e reason fail- ed. He was arrested in New Or- leans as a vearant on the- 26th of October,. 1%707 and taken before Re- corder Houghton,. who ordered him to be sent -to a hospital. • The hos- pital authorities refused to receive • him because he was deranged, and he was removeLt to an insane asylum, -where he died on the 2d of Decem- ber following. Suppose a man should sail, all the boiling and blazinc day, iound and and round an old Butch ship in the • harbor, and the next day you should see him, like a magnified fly, creep- ing -up and down the. masts and spars, and -examining the rigging,' and you should ask- him what he was doing, and he should answer, "I • have heard that this hip is a dull sailer; and 1 want to look at it and •see." --Could he ever find out in this Fay? No. Let him weigh anchor and spread the canvas, and take the wind and bear away, if he would • know ho NV she sails. • •- So, if a Christian would !learn his true state, let him not row round and round the hull of his self-con- sciousness, -and creee up and down the masts and spars of his feelings and affections;• but let him spread the sails of resolution, and bear away on the ocean of duty. Then he s.hall know whether he be .a dull or a, fast sailor.—Beeeher'a Life Thoughts. Opposition t Great Inventions. Ttadition says Jahn Faust, one of the three inventers of printing, was charged with multiplying bpoks by the aid of • the devil, and was prosecuted both by the priests and the people. The strongest opposi- tion eo the press, has, however, been presented in Turkey. • The art of printing had ,existed three hundred years before a printi4 press was dtablished in Constantinople. From 1726 to 1740, that press issued on- ly twenty-three volumes. It was tlien stopped and did not resume its issues until after an interval of mare than forty years- About 1780 a press was establithed at Scutari, and between 1780 and 1808 issued forty volumes. Again its opera- tions were suspended, ani were n'ot resumed until the year 18f..)0, since which time it has worked more in- dustriously than heretofore, although fettered with the paternal oversight of the Turkish govc lenient. The ribbon -loom is an invention' of the sixteenth century, and on the plea thateit deprived many work- men of bread WAS 'prohibited in Holland, in Germany, in the dorni- nions of the ehurch, and in other countries of Europe. At Hamburg, the council ordered a loom to be publicly (mimed. The stocking -loom •shared the fate of the ribboe-loom. In England, the patronage of:Queen Elizabeth was requested for the in- vention, but it is said that the in- ventor was rather impeded than as- sisted in his undertaking. In France, opposition to the stocking -loom NA, as of the most base ard cruel kind. A Frenchman who had adopted the invektiOn, manufactured by the loom I. pair of silk stockings for Louis xvi. They were presented to the monarch. The parties, however, • who supplied hoisery- to the court, caused several loops of the stockings to be cute and thus 'brought he stocking -loom 'into disrepute at head- quarters. Table -forks appear so necessary a t of the furniture of the dinner tt.c}le,that 110 one can scarcely believe that the tables of the sixteenth cen- trey were deititute of th(3rn. They were not, however, introduced until the commencement of the seventh century, and they were ridiculed as superfluous and effeminate, while the person who introduced in- to was called Lucifer. They were invented in Italy, and brought thence to England, napkins being used in 1.his oontry by the polite, and fingers! the mulftucle. - The sawl ill . wes , broogfitinto 0 Enaland frl on Rcl olla , in 1763. , But its iiitro lection so diipleased ,the Engli h 61 a.t the ei terprise was -1.fiandone 1.
