For a man proposing to farm, to come
here without just such articles as cannot
be carried over the Government route; is
'simply absurd ; they cannot be nroe*d
here, and if he comes without them, he
has simply to return to Canada for them,
before commencing operations. The
conclusion to which my observations
have led, is, that immigration to Mani-
toba is at least one year in advance of
the times, and such is- the expressed

. THE ROUTE.
. Practically speaking, there is but one
route to this country from Ontario,
worthy of the designation, and this is by
St. Paul. I have already mentioned the
absolute necessity of _settlers bringing
along with them axticles that are, uncon-
ditionally refused. transit by the Fort
William, or Government route, which is
a sufficient reason in itself for .leading
people so ineumbered to adopt the former
mentioned, and, indeed, from what Lam
told, by parties who know what the Fort
William route is, by experience, I have
no hesitation iu advising every person to
avoid it. The inconvenieuee and hard-
ships are unbearable, and the Cost, in
the long run, nearly, if not quite; equals
that of the St. Paul, to say nothing of
the difference in the time occupied. -%
very general misapprehension obtains in
Ontario in regard to -the bonding of goods
and Mock through the United States. It
is generally supposed, and in fact the
railway and steamboat companies do net
appear to be free from the mistake, or if
so, they mislead the public—that, by
undertaking certain obligations 1 at the
United States entry custom hot -se. the
owner of teams, stock, goods, etc. May
take possession of the ;same al the
railway terminus, and • drive them
across the plains himself,:: with-
out further Jet or hindrance beyond
getting his certificate at the Pembina,
Custom House, that he has passed the
bonder. Now, no such thing is the case.
Bonded goods, of whatever -nature, must
be conveyed by bonded lines, over the
entire route that may be travelled in the
United States, so thathe owners of
41
stock or teams are 0 elled to take
with thetn an agent, of sa bonded line.
The charge for this serfice, 1 believe,
