The Arch -Bishop of Paris the Abbe
Dugerry, and 69 priests 'were shot by
the insurgents on Tuesday night, but
the Versaillists Managed to save 169
other hostages, who were in inutile -mit
peril.
The conflagrations, although raging on
all sides, have soinewhat abated. ' On
Friday night the London fire brigade
arnned to assist MI arresting a their pro-
gress. ,
--. The collections in the Louvre have all
been saved except the library, in which
a great many valuable books were de-
stroyed. The Nntionan Library and
Grand Livree are safe. .
There are rumore of awful cruelties
perpetrated by the i Versaillists, who , are

children found with arms in their Loads.

—Archdeacon McLean has succeeded
in raising the sum of $1,212.05 in Toronto.

establishing lodges of Odd Fellows at

ago, broke with reat violence on W rds-
ville. Stables, fences and sheds 'were
/demolished and the rafters, sheeting,
and shingles of the Roman Catholic
Church were torn from the roof as if they

hurricane.
. —A serious accident occurred or the
Grand Trunk Railway, near Newc stle,
on Thursday evening, 25th ult. The
express train was thrown from the track,
and -the mail-cai containing the mails
was burned. There was no loss of life,
nor any person seriously hurt. The ac-
e:dent was caused by a rail being dis-
placed. .
-- There appears to be great danger of
another destructive fire in the Ottawa
• distinct. The flames have not swept over
any extensive tract, but still they are
spreading rapidly in several localitien and
have approached to within a short dis-
tance of the capital. From Pembroke to
L'Original, numerous fires of greater or
less extent are reported on both sines of
the river.
A remarkable salt spring was dis-
covered_ last week M the vicinity of Ham-
ilton, on the line of the Great Western
Railway. While some men were dig-
• ging a well, they all at once, struck upon
this salt spring, the water from vehicle
gushed out so rapidly as to cause a sus
pension of all further operations. When
the water is boiled a heavy sediment of
pure salt accumulates in the bottom of
the vessel.
