Seaforth and Wroxeter, is proving. a great convenience to the travelling -pudic, and a saving of much delay. As proof of this we may state that the stage each way is daily loaded. The old Mail stage does not fifteen to suffer any from the competition either, as it appears to have its usual quota of. paesengers, and is yet frequent- ly Ctowded outside as well as inside. Sam!. eaThe salt business is exceeding- - ly dull at the present time. Prices are low, and tire market seems to be well .suppried, as it is difficult to effect sales unless at an enrememerative.price. The Coleman & Gouinlock well is still kept conetantl.t at work, saul a large amount of salt is daily being turned out. But few sales are being anade, however, and the enterprising proprietors seam determined; to keep piling it up, barrel upon barrel; to fte-itit the "goad times corning.' I Last Words of the Iiiii•On Home i Journal. We were not a ' little surprised, last , Tuesday morning, On opening l the Daily Home Journal, to find the 'article we copy below. For -the sake 6 1 those who - i risked their all in thitoenterprise, we are sorry that the result has not been other. wise. From the first, ,hoviever, we felt convinced that the nndertaking was a ' hopeless one. There are as many papers in the County now as can be supported, and to firmly establish another, as expensive and as , hard to keep up as the one just discon- tinued, would take more than the com- bined capital of all the publieheit in the Countye We regret that the promoters of what was from the first regarded by every one as a most hazardous arild even reckless enterprise, have seen, fit, to throw the blame of its failureon the firm of Messrs. I Gwatkin & Son, of 'I'oronto, from whom they, purchasedtheir ma- terial. From experience in o rdei ing ma- -terial from various firms, we do not hesitate to say that the orders for the ma- terial of the HOMO! Journal Were as promptly filled by Messrs. Gwatkin, as is customary where so large an amount of material is required. It woulll have been more graceful I ad the publithers of the defunct journal laid the onus of their failure where. it properly belonged, in- stead of attempting to lay it on the ehoulders of a firm so favorablY known and popular -among the printers, of On- tario as Messrs. Gwatkin & , Soh. The following is the article, and (with the ex- ception of the allusion to the TorOnto firm which we have rnentioued) we do not believe a more touching o more happily expressed valedictory wis, ever written : THE CONCLUSION OF THE MATT R. " With this number the Home Journal ceases to exist. No doubt Many of our friends will be surprised at _such an an- nouncement, bit we assure them that it, grieves us deeply that' we are not able to carry out the high opinion the were -kind enough to form of us: , A de now that we have decided uPon this tep, it is only right to explain, ptibli ly, the reasons why we are compelled to jdo so. It it well known that.we purchased the material of the office earty in January last, and were to have epened business in every branch immediately1 Had we been enabled to do this, all would have been right, but the,COnduct of Gwatkin & Co., of Toronto,' from whom we- pur- chased the material, has oeen; siniply in- famous. The dilly-dallied i with the presaes and)Ob type from week t week, until at la:et wewere utterly eliu out of all clime& of securing atshar of the spring'ethusiness. in fact, the last of the material only came to hand on the 29t1 ult.—weary rnonthe fter the order wee given. Had ; Gwatkin ' & (to. de- liberately deterhained to ruin us, they could not have gono about the work in a more scientific manner. The!r have suc- ceeded at last, and we trust tier are en- tirely satisfied. We have labored bard—e en to the wearing out of body and soul—Ito turn 1 I , out a paper such as we believed teoder- ich capable of sustainingt ani We have the satisfaction of knowing t at jour ef- forts are appreciated, if they wire not backed up as thoroughly as, w think they deserved. And now that we have spent our "bottom, dollar "in the enter- prise, without being able te Succeed, we , can but throw ourselves upon the gener- osity of the public, confidently hoping that we will be remembered with those feelings of charity which inva.riebly ex- ist in the warm depths of Iranian sym- pathy. 1 We are well aware of the fact that sue- : cess is the touch -stone in all such cases, but having failed we now own up to it, but we are firmly resolved that no man who has trusted, us in the County of Huron shall lose a single cent through our coming to Goderich. In bidding adieu to journalism in this noble County. we do so sincerely lrusting that the town of Goderich will go on and prosper, although'we shall hare ;0 share in that prosperity, and, if it is ot in- - pertinent to say sot we would fty that it would not Buffet if a certain! element of -j fossilisin were extinct. 171The hee we are right or wrong in the stateme t, We leave the reader to judge for himself. ' Under these, circumstances we have felt it our duty to offer to the proprietors -Of the Huron- Siena/ either to buy out , their good will or sell ours to theta. The latter has been deeided upon, . an4 in ac- cordance with our agreement, we sus- pend in favor of that journal. Those who have paid us in advance for the Journal will receive the weekly Signal for a suf- ficient length of time to refund them. . This is all we feel like saying. If -we could meet with a Mark Tapley, under similar circumstances, we would shake halide with him with the remark, 'What a jolly thing is this conclusion of the matter V" —With regard to Mr. Luxton, w would here desire to say, we sincerel trust that wherever his future lot in life may be cast, he will meet with that success to which his indonaitable energy and enterprise se justly entitle him. Wroxeter. FiRE:—Iteland's shingle factory, had a very narrow escape from fire on Wednes- day last, the 3rd inst. A spark from the furnace alighted on some shingles and sairdust, and had net immed ate ex - eaten been made, the building Iiir uld not hatte escaped. Little damage ve s done. DEBATE. --The debate betwe n the Clifford Literary Society and the Wroxe eta- Literary Association'came Off at IvleDonald'e Hall, Clifford, on T ursday etening, 4th inst. Though the afternoon and evening were dull and rainy, and the roads very muddy, there "vasa large crowd present, the hall being pre ty well 1 tilled. After a long, careful debate—both sides of .the question being exceedingly well debated—the chairman. Mr. Morri- son, of Clifford, decided that the Wrox- eter speakers had succeeded in Proving Rome to be greater than Greece. The Wroxeter debaters speak very highly of the manner in which they were treated by the Clifford Society, the ine bers of which acted in the moat courteous and gentlemanly manner toward thein ROBBERY.--JameS Hamel, 'wh]b stop- ping at McLaughlin's Hotel, had his trunk opened and his purse contaihing $300 in gold and bills abstracted, some thee during Sunday night lat. : An old plasterer named Freyn was siispected, but when accused of the theft, denied it in toto. 1 But as the evidende against him was pretty conclesive, he was at last (frightened into telling where he had put the purse. but when found, the money was wanting. It was subsequently found near atpile of lumberadjoining McLaugh- stables. After the money was found the thief was allowed to escape. Mr. Hamel had made arrangements to start for Manitoba on Monday morning, When the robbery detained him, so being in a hurry to get off, he did not take any steps towards prosecuting the offender. QUEEN'S BIRTTIDAV.—As the boys say, "there ain't vgoing to be any Queen's Birthday in Wroxeter this year.'' We suppose the 'day Will come around in Wroxeter as in other pieces, but judg- ing frot# present appearances, Iler Majestl loving subjects in and around Wroxete , do not intend to honor her natal dry, as .has been their wont on former occasions of the kind, We hope this neglect to celebrate the 24th is not attiibutlble to any diminution of loyalty on the p rt of the people of Wroxeter. The thing has been put Off ;from day to day, and -from week to week; and the conseque ce is, that while other yilleges have out their bills, detailing program- mes of s orts, pic-nics, fire ;works, &e., Wroxete has not a bill printed, or a cent colt cted. It is really too bad, but apparent y there is no help for it now. A great many- of our Villagers intend going to a distance to spend the day. Some talk of ping to Teeswater, Where a "big time is expected, ()them to Blue - vale, but as far as I can learn, the great- est part pf our sight -seen* population purpose speeding the day in the classic precints lof Jamestown, It is expected that the leadini. hotels in that consequen- tial little town will be crowded, as a very large influx of visitors is expected So mote a be. , BlVt11. LITER WY.—A meeting washeld in the Orange Hall, on Tuesday evening last, for the purp 8e of organizing a LiteraryInsti- tute. • A great number of the mot inffu- eutial vil agers were present, manifesting that they fully appreciated the benefits that would in all probability follow such a society. As nothing of this sort has ever bef re been instituted in this village es,e hope 't may prove successful, there being's() many young people here who have hu few amusements which are profitablg to occupy their leisure hours. ,) RAILk NN A.Y. —A deputation consisting of Messrs. rummond, • Sloan and Kelly, of Blyth, accompanied by delegates from Wingharp, Belgrave, Londesborough and Clinton left for London on ..fuesday the 9th insta t, to confer with the Directors of the I1onclon, Huron and Bruce Rail- way, apd to offer inducements and show the adva tages of running the line by 'Clinton, IBIyth, Wingliam, etc. Witte .—P, Kelly of the steam saw- mill sustained quite a loss a few clays since by the breaking of ' one of his cir- cular saws which cost about $140 to re-. place it—Mr. Frairie has just returned from a i)ecruiting (!) tour in good spirits, quite hale and hearty, and to the great joy of the choristers is able to resume his office as leader of the choir of the Blyth ;Presbyterian Church. * - i .• Grey. PRES4TATION.—On the evening of Friday, the 5th inst, a 'Amber of the friends and neighbors of Mrs. Hector McKay, waited on that lady and gave her a surprise by the presentation of an easy chair and a beautiful warm' cloak, as a token of their sincere sympathy for her long and severe affliction. After tea, for which the party went prepared, an appropri!ate presentation address was read, and was responded to in behalf of Mrs. MiKay and her family, in suitable -terms. "The Beautiful River" was thensung by nearly all present, a por- tion of Scripture read, and a, short time spent in prayer, when the party broke- up, all h ghly pleased and profited. 1 AMID in some Shingle squeezed Mr. Hu man the tight on TOWN faction i which t this yea will be a large m enough roll to Reeve. USborne. AMPHIBIOUS MONSTER. --John W. Mowbray, of Usborne, shot a very large Tortoise on the 1st ult. It is said to be of a different species from any formerly known to exist In this section of the country, having but little shell under- neath its body, and a number of horns or nobs upon the tail. The dimensions are as follows : Length, 39 inches, in- cluding head and tail; width across the back, 15 inches. The feet were also very large, measuring 5 inches from the two most distant claws of the foot. The animal Aoubtless was of an enormous age, being naossed like a atone that had Lil underneath water for years. —The trials of contested elections promises to be very tedioue and expen- sive. In the North Yotk case, it is said, there will be 400 witnesses, of whom Mr. Boultbee will call over 300. Equally large numbers are likely to come before theJudges in other cases. —At the meeting of the Presbytery in Woodstock, a few days ago, a communi- cation was read by the Moderator from the Rev.D.McDermid, confessing himself guilty of la violation of the seventh com- mandment, and asking the Presbytery to deal with him af they saw fit. A com- mittee was then appointed to wait upon Mr. MeDermil, and having returned and made their report, he was formally deposed from the Ministry, and removed from the membership. Eby Harris, a farmer in Dere- ham. ethibited in the ton of Ingersoll, a few days ago an animal which puzzles those who have seen it to make out what it is. The mother of it is a cow. The head and shape of the animal is like that of a calf, andits legs and hoofs like that of a sheep. Its hide is part wool, of a jet black colour, and part hair. It is 3 weeks old and. apparently as healthy as any other calf or lamb. The owner was offered, by an enteeprising speculator $150 for the beast; bit no less a surn than $1,000 will buy it. Mr. Barnum Will likely become the fortunate possessor -of this curiosity. SPECIA.L NOTICES.' For some of the perforrnancee of this horse. see bills. Until recently, the thoroughbred horse was considered only ada,-Oted to the turf, but the principles of breeding, as is now well established, assigm him a, far nobler sphere. It is now agreed that to attain success in tearing any bi the do- mestic animals, the male must be thor- ough -bred. 1 To produce the racer, the trotting horse, the .; enduring horse -df -all -work and the spirited roadster and carriage horse, the stallion must be thorough- bred. With this cross, the heavy farm mare will produee the uoble cOaelt horse, the thorough -bred mare the tracer, and the trotting or pacing mare twill yield the trotter. Under this theory, I take pride in offering "Sir' .Arch y ' to the breeders of horses in this section of the country. As a stock getter be is un- rivalled; his stock is noted for sound constitution, for great strength, docility of disposition and speed. " Sir Archy' is seven years old, stands Mt hands high, a beautiful rich bay, with black legs, mane and tail, broad heavy quar- ters, and powerfully muscled, combining ia an eminent degree the noble and per- fect horse.
