erable interest was manifested by
the lookers-on, and some betting in a
small way Was indulged in. The
Judges are entitled to much credit
for the impartial manner in which

Smoot ExamiNkrioN.---A tub-
lic examination of the school in
Section No. 9, taught by Archibald
McDonald, tot>k place on. Wednes-
day, 22d inst. • The school -room was
decorated in a very tasteful manner
with evergreens and artificial flow-
ers of various hues. Everything
within the walls exhibited no ordi-
nary degree of neatness, cleanliness
and go%d taste. • The attendance of
visitoli, including young and old of
both • sexes, indicated the interest
which is taken in the education of
the rising generation. The exer-
cises coinmenced at half -past 9A. M.,
and the following programme was
gone through with: , Reading, Spell-
• rug, History, Geograiihy, _Arithmet-
ic, Dialogues, Recitations, Writing,
&c. Among the number who
thronged the schooi-room was Mr.
Walter Alexander, teacher in the
township of Morris, who aasisted in
examining the pupil The manner
-in which the stu41erts acquitted
themselves in the ble 'relies under
consideration was ilig ily satisfactory.
They displayed a thoroughness
which is not always In4 in- common
schools. The whole was a com-
plete success. At the close, the
Trustees • of the schoojl and other.
gentlemen made some appropriate
remarks, expressing; t reir satisfac-

New Railway.

London, Huron and Bruce Railway
has been. elected; with J. • Birrei,
Esq., as President; J. J. Coue-
ins, Esq. Mayor, Vice -President;
E. W. Hyman, • Esq., President,
and -Thomas Churcher, Esq., Secre-
tary. The well-known position of
these men commercially and pecu-
niarily, angnrs well for the enter-
prise, and we wish it God -speed.
One of the first acts of the new
Board was to give • location to the
projected line, and We are happy to
say that the Seaforth and Ainley-
ville route is the one chosen. We
conceive it to be the boars -den duty
of every man who as the •welfare
ot Seaforth at hear tct _unite in en-
couraging -the cons ru tion of the
road, and as 'the c n truation will
depend upon the gviig of aids in
the form of bonuses, it s to -be hoped
these bonases will e given. The
