THE
HURON EXPOSITOR. -
.. 'Visit • to Zev . Hen y 'Ward
Beecher's Ohuroh,'
Not long ago I had the pleasure
-of spending a Sabbath adorning in
Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, my
impressions of which:, perchance,
might not prove uninteresting to
sone of your readers.
Among many other coveted pri-
-flees, I have long had an anabi-
tion to see and hear the famous
man whom the world acknowledges
prince and paramount" among
preachers s of the. present .age—the
man who can' preach It sermoar,
give a lecture, make a book, edit a
paper, run a far n, drive: a• horse and
crack a joke." At last circum-,
stances favored the gratification of
my cherished desire. Accordingly,
on a bright Sabbath Mottling, I left
the United States Hotel, where I
hard: stayed the previous night, to
cross over to Brooklyn, on one of
the numerous :ferries which ply be-
tween those cities. I was bound
to improve my chance of getting a
good seat. by being ,early, and I
found plenty others a the same
mind. " Are you _ going to hear
Beecher 7' was ,the oft repeated query
somewhat flippantly expressed as a
company, mostly strangers to each
other; glided swiftly across East
River in . one of those stately ferry
boats. We found our selves in
good time for the best seat acces-
moble to strangers (the rear seat in
the lower gallery), and with plenty
of time to survey the structure and
caapacity- of, the celebrated church;
from whose walls echo, Sabbath
after Sabbath, thoughts that reach
arid thrill the hearts of more than
dross of any other living , man..
The architecture of Plymouth
Church_ is simple and inexpensive.
The walls are of plain brick. To
bring as many as possible within
range of the preacher's voice seems
to- have been the design of, the
structure in -side. . The ground work
is painted white. A tasteful green
carpet covers floor and aisles. A
broad gallery encircies the church,
and an end gallery above 'that
again, called the " Strangers' Gal-
fiery. Front of the choir gallery
is the pulpit—orrattier a plain
form unencumbered with any un-
necessary furniture or saperflous
' adornment. 'To the right is small
stand bearing a vase of flowers.
Front of an ancient looking chair'
stands a one-lgged table support-
ing a bible and ,loran: book, not
half so costly as you frequently `see
in a small country chinch. - There
is a unique design about the whole
church, ga simplicityand plainness
without excess, tdl]li seemed to
indicate that the preacher himself
was the architect. Charles Dickens.
when on a visit to this country,
remarked to Mr. Beecher: that his
church " just suited him."
But what a mass of people are
congregating here ! And still the
<:ur•cent flows in. Every seat is
full, and the busy sextons are car-
rying in portable chairs—which are
no sooner adjusted than occupied --
-that every nook aaud corner may be
utilised—And now the aisles and
Spaces are paekecI. ` The obliging
sextons have done their part, arid
all that remains •.now is for them to
cast their accustomed consolatory
smile into .the deject el countenances
of these who are unable even to get
to the dour, but are trying to peer
over the heads of those before tllenl.
A startling gush of melody from
t {e organ tells the hour has aaarieed,
and immediately Mr. Beecher makes
this ap'pe u'ance, .seat. himself on the
nreclieval chair, and with placid
dignity, looks leisurely over, his vast
auditory. Heis a medium-sized
hien of router fine proportions--
about
roportions=about fifty years of age pilobably
round features-, smooth face, fair
-hail already turning gray. Their
is a sedate, dignified calmness of
manner and countenanc3 in all Ws
movements at ,lest, that contrasts
rLrnatkably with the sprightly, ha-
m o r0 11$
u-morotas prod aerie us you, so often
meet with from his pen.
As. soon as the music ceased he
commenced the services with a
ehort prayer of about a minute's
length, in a low,. nree surecl tone, as
if uurnirtdful whether half the.
greatt congregation could hear hire
or not, and yet every one dict, .I
believe, ' so distinctly fell every
syllable like liquid drops.' A
by ani is then; announced,` wshic1i is
sung t3 a simple- melody in, which
`'tilt; congregationjoin, and although
by courtesy of an obliging Member
of the congregation a " Plymouth
Collection of Hymns" is placed be-
fore me, 1 am constrained to listen ;
such is the irresistible effect on my
rli tesical suscepti ,ilit.ies of the' cont-
b.oed hatrmory of a powerful or-
gan, a large • choir, and the vast
asst nr bl y. . .
Then follows the reading of a
chapter u the same subdued toue
and reserved manner, as ..if care-
fully
a efully husbanding his muscle and
nerve resources for the more com-
plete action which his sermon
freight call forth Another hymn
is sung, followed by a list of an-
nouncements which isbv no means
the least interesting part of the
eercrlony. The a °,puotncemcut of a
