Socren.—The andel under the auspicee
of the Canada Presbyterian Church, was
held at Mr. John Elliott's,. McKillop, on
Wednesday evening last. As usual the
attendance was large, and a very pleasant
time was spent.

lecture on the subject of temperance, in
the Temperance Hall, of this 'Village. .on

Club, have given 15 of the proceeds of •
their late entertainment to theBenevo-
lent Society. The members of the Club

George Lee, has purchased Messrs. Shear-

visions, and purposes, continuing on the
business in the old stand. He is making.

doubt do a good business. Mr. Lee Will
continue the Flour and. Feed branch of
the business, arid • will deliver. either in
any part of the village free of charge.

• GoR RECTIO N. —Weunderst and that we
were in error last IWeek io giving Mr.
Kyle credit for the erection of the salt
derrick for theMerchants' Salt Company.
Mr. Kyle erected the block, but Mr.
John M. Martin erected the derrick.
Mr. Martin was also the contractor for
the derrick at the Coleman & Gouiedoek
• well ; also the Listowel well, which .he
has just completed. He.has also the con-
tract for the erection of the derricksat
the Mitehell and. Ateleyville wells,
BAILWA,Y Mannrene. —Large. and en-
thusiastic meetings were held in behalf
of the London, Huron and Bruce Rail-
way, at Exeter on Wednesday, and at
Zutich and Varna on Thursday. At the
time of going to press we have been un-
able to learn the result at the two latter,
but at the former.a strong resolution was
• carried in favor of the roach. Each of the
meetings were addeessed by a Delegation
from London. The Delegation are also
to meet the Reeves and Deputy Reeves
of the County to -day at Clinton, to con-
fer with them is th the probability of -
• secaring a coma y b9nus.

Carrne Feek.-The monthly dattle
fair was held on the Tuekersmith Agri-
cultural Society's Grounds, on Tuesday
• last. The fair was the most successful
which nas yet been held. There were 90
head of cattle on the ground, and the
eompetitition amongst buyers was pretty
keen. - As the stock was mostly of a su-
perior quality, good prices were realized.
Nearly all the stock changed hands In
• addition to the local buyers,. there were
present buyers from Clinton, Mitchell,
Stratford and other places. We antici-
• pate for our monthly cattle fairs, now,
an. era of success and usefulness. Fol-
lowing the success of the lest, we have
no doubt but the next fair will be even
more successful, and • both buyers and'
sellers will do well to be present in still
• greater numbers.

that some silly person in Carronbrook, on
whose honesty the publisher 'must have
relied for correct information, .has inter-
• larded the list with fictitious names and
industries, the following being among the'

characteristic of ris ,small -witted individ-
ual, who 'would fain enjoy a little local

throwing a blot on so valuable a record of
our progress and present status as a peo-
ple. Whoever, he may be, his peurile at-
• tempt to mar and detract from the value
of a greai work in which all Canadians
should take a just pride deserves the
severest censure, if not condign. punish-
ment.
Riau Avis.—On Valentine Day, last
week, a young professional gentlenian of
this village received an intimation that a
valuable present awaited him at the ex-
press office, in the shape of a brace of
White Woodcock. He immediately pre-
sented himse .f at the express counter,
secured the box containing his prize,—

" Cheese-makingt and its advantages to
the ccin)manity. Mr: Hugh Hamilton

the speaker explained. the reason that
had induced Mr. Mcl ee (who is about

hood) to request Mr. allantyne to lec-

as Mr. Ballantyne w,, s in the cheese•

Ballantyne said that I had now been in

with farming or stock raising. He had

Soliee.—A Soiree was beid in the P.'
M. Chunk, on Wednesday evening, 15th
inst. The weather was very fine and
sleighing good; which had the effect of
bringing a great nurnber to the tea: The
eatables were all that could be desired
and reflected great credit upon the lady
managers who got up the affair. After
full justice bad been done to the inner
man, the greater part of the gathering
-repairedto the W, M. Church, were able

Messrs. Hazzard, Whitham. and others.
The proceeds amounted to $55, which
went towards liquidatint the debt and

GOOD. —A fund of $56 was raited. in a
few hours on Monday last, tor the par -

advocating the railway interests.
MEETING. —A meeting was held in
'Armstrong's Hotel, on Monday evening
last, for the purpose of appointing an ex-
ecutive committee to manage the fund
• raised. for railway expenses and. other
matters which Might be required to be
attended to, to further the interests of
the railway project. The following gen-
tlemen were appointed, a committee,
with power to appoint sub-comniittees,
viz : -John Leckie, Esq., President; Wm.
