Trial by Jury.
The word jury' denotes, in short,
:an institution so: coiritnonly known
and so sacredly 1 egarded as a sort o
palladium of J3rttislt liberty--uairne-
ly, Trial by Jury—that we shall say
a word or two concerning-- what is
known of its origin among t:s. Per-
haps we should rather sa.v that our
remarks would tae theformof a

-Juries sat to try cases in Henry, IL's
time. Now what were Henry II.'s
juries like ? It is matter of the
purest conje.;ture. We cannot say,
and we cannot and out. The growth
of_trial by jury has probably 1,een a
gradual process.. Its origin was,
with little room for doubt, as fol-
lows : hi t':e eatly times of our own.

He wishes to purge hiwselt of hi
itnputed guilt. His jury, by what
he was tried, were the men of 11i
own hundred. They knew ever
act of his life—his 1n -coming, hi
-out-going, his innocence, or his guilt
they constituted the jury by whicl
he was tried,; and the peauliat ity b
their case' was that they tried the
cause, leaving a complete previous
knowledge of all the facts. , Herein
lies one chief difference between our
ancient and our modern jury. While
•the jurors of of early times possessed
a full knowledge of all the facts of
the case, the modern twelve—" good
men and true''—=are men caught hap-
hazard in the streets we May say,
sten who are`supposed to be perfect-
ly innocent of any knowledge of the
farts of the case they are to try un-.
til they heer the evidence. After
hearing that evidence, they tell the
'Judge what they thinkabout it. It
has not been for so very long a per-
rod thiit the fear of a packed jury
-has ceased in England ; at d in the -
last century at celebrated Judge said
it was one of the highest feats of
constitutional government to ;get
twelve honest then into a jury -box.
It is thus established. that a modert
juror is the very opposite of the old
juryman ; Ter the one entered upon
a trial, in all cases, with `a know-
ledge of the facts of the case ; the
other, as rule, knows nothing of
them until they are disclosed in evi-
dence. And this knowledge possess-
ed by the old. jurors wag.: a matter of
necessity-. Take the case, for exam-
ple, of al, small --village ,nowadays.
Everybody knows everybody else's
business, and, if the men of the vil-
lage tried the criminal themselves,
ignorance of facts: and freedom from.
prejudice would be alike impossible.

Wounds Inflicted by fferent.
Weapons.
1
A col responder t of the London
Times writes from the headquarters
of one of the German armies in
France : I have made a great many
inquiries about the wounds inflicted
by different weapons, and I find that
the evidence is, on the whole, to the
effect that the Chassepot inflicts a
mere dangerous wound than. the
needlegun, and is a more effective
weapon in every respect. -A thought-
less inq wirer may find surgeons who
will assert the contrary, because the
Chassepot bullet at a long range is
perhae,s less destructive than the
needlegun at a short one. Thec.ri-
Lice made by the French bullet is
small, and if no bone has been
touched,is apt to heal over quickly;
bhit the canal made through the flesh
inflames, suppurates, and causes dan-
ge •pus swelling and internal evil. 1
So, itheroughly is this now tinder-
stolid, that some of the best surgeons
