FEBRUARY 3, 871. , Perseverance of a Young Scotch t Student'. A few weeks sine" itowits my duty -as (University examiner, to recom- mend a student for the high degree of Doctor in Science. This gradu- ate is the son of a poor Highland crofter, and when a boy, went out to herd cattle during the manner from March to Octar. His wages for seven months were only , but they were enough: to -pay his fees at the parish school during .the winter. It is true that the school was six miles from bis father's hut, but a walk of twelve miles to and fro over a bleak inoerland, does not .deter a promising Scotch boy . from going to school. It did deter, e e how- ever, some of the farmer's sons in his neighborhood ; so at fourteen my young friend took up a little ad- venture school to teach these less hardy lads, and in the course of - time he made enough to carry him to the b.urg school_ at Perth, where he extended the knowledge of 'class- ics and mathematics which he had began at the parish school. !Still working, still teaching, still saVing, he fought his way step by step throuch bursaries and scholarships a won..l) him, till he bedame a certi- ficate', Leacher of the first clawunder the Privy Council, a, Muter of arts, . a Bachelor of Science in the Univer- sity of Edinbuigh, and, as I have said, a few. weeks since it was my privilege to examine him as a Doc- tor of Science. es *4.- • A Successful Adventure? The Dukekof Edinburgh, who has the reputation of having a keener :eye to the main chance than quite becomes a prince, is reported to have made a lucky investment during his recent vist to New Zealand. In oorrimon with some of the other officers of the 'Galatea,' he purchas- ed shares in the 'Long Drive claim" I at £50 a share, and when the mail left Auckland,- about two months ago, the shares, on which onry £3 ns, had been paidstood at £65, while in June alone £6,000 dividends had been paid on a total subscribed cap- ital of £4,000. This is not the only instance in which an officer of the British service has made a. lucky hit in New Zealand. Some years ago a most marvelous stroke of good luck befel one who needed it much worse than the -Duke:, A poor lieu- tenant in a marching regiment quar- tered in New Zealand, had contriv- ed to save £37 out of his . pay, and hearing good `.!accotints of the pros- pects of the Township of Otago, lie wrote to a sagacious friend there, enclosing an _order for the whole sum mentioned, and saying that he was determined to invest his hardly- -earned little savings in real-estate in that place. The friend most jii- diciously bought with £352a. corner allotment, a.nd Wrote back alnclosing the necessary papers and the £2 bal- ance. Within a short time ago Ota- go, now the wealthiest place in Neav- Zealand, became the rage ; !prices rose tremendously, the ground pur- chased by the poor_ efficer became the object of a brisk Competition, and was finally let on building lease, at a ground rent ot £800 a year, to great bank, which has erected on the site a magnfieent edifice. Lard Chesterfield Expatiates to his sira, in one of his fan -ions letters, on ' the advantage of always having in his hand a fittle ready money ; there is no saying, he very justly olterves, to what profit it may not by some chalice incident, be turned. It cer- tainly proved so in that aase. ' I. Ef,ow Much Work a Horse a,ndo At a former meeting of the Brit- ish Association in Dublin Mr. Charles Btanconi, of Cashi, read a paper relative to his extensive car establishment, after which a gentle- man stated that at Pirckford's, the great English carrier's, they could not work a horse economically more than ten miles a day, and wished to hear Mr. Blaconi's opinion on the subject. Mr. Blanconi stated he found, by experience, he Could bet- ter work a. horse eight miles. a day for six days in the week, than six for seven days in the week. By not working an Sunday heeffectedsaving pf 1 2 per cent. Mr. Blanconiis opinion on this point is of the highest. authority; for although the extension of railways in the land has thrown thirty-seven of his vehicles out of employ, which daily ran 2,446 miles, still he has over nine hundred horses, working sixty-seven coaveyances, which daily travel 1,241 miles. It is also tounded tl e result of forty-three years' experience.---Seientific Arne - The,Way the Monday Goes.
