THE ONTARIO LEGISLATURE.
Thursday, Jan 26.—The House
went into Committee of the Whole
ora -the bill to regulate poisonsand
respecting chemists, uggists andd
apothecaries—Mr. Eyrein the chair
Considerable amuseuaent was .creat-
ed by the explanations of •Mr.. Mc-
Gill, the promoter of the bill. On
clause four Mr. Blake said this
would create a close. corporation. Af-
ter sonic discuaidon, the obtuse was
-defeated, 'on a division.. Several
succeedinat'clauses were • agreed to ;
and, it being 6 o'clock, the House
rose for recess. After recess,. the
House proceeded to forward sevdral
private bills. Hon. Sir. Carling
moved the House into committee on
the bill for the distribution and set-
tlement of the estate of Hon. George
Jervis Goodhue, deceased. Hon:
Jai Mr. Richards moved the three
mouths' hoist. He recited the pro
visions of the wilt, and stated -it as
his opinion that the House should
not interfere with it. The sum. in-
volved was about $600,000. Of
this sum, Mr. Goodhue had left the
interest of $30,000 to each of his five
daughters, and $22,000 to his son,
-besides an annuity of 1,6,000 a year.
There had been various legal opin-
ions on the will, but his (Hon. Mr.
Richard's) opinion was that it was
• the intention of the testator that the
interests of the children were con-
tingent, and not vested, and that
the interests of the grand-ehildren
• should be protected. The, parties
should have applied to the local tri-
bunal, and not to this House.
• Messrs. Ckunberla.nd and Boyd op-
posed the bill, which was suppOrtecl
by Messrs. Beatty, MeGill, McKel-
• lar, and. Scott, of Ottawa; and a
vote was taken with the following:,
result : Yeas, 13 ;.Nays,,..60. The
Committee reported the bil1, with
several amendments—the report to,
• be received to -morrow.
• Friday, Jan..27.—Mr. Blake call,
ed attention to the state of affairs in
the London Lunatic Asylum, where.
typhoid fever had preVailed, owing,
to bad water and defective drainage.:
Hon. Mr. Carling 'admitted the
ness of the patients and the death of
.
an attendant, but the drainhad been
repaired. The node went -into
committee on the bill respecting
election petitions and for the more
effectual prevention of corrupt pra&
tices at elections to the Legislature',
of Ontario, Mr. Eyre in the chair:
• There was a short discussionl on the
• motion. of the Attorney -General
that $1,000 be. paid to the Clerk of
• the Court of Queen's Bench in con-
nection with this - Act. - Mr. Blake.
contended that this was entirely toe
much and that rem un era.tionshould be
based upon a sliding scale—say
or at least a50, for each case. The
Attorney -General explained that
this high re -nu meration was extra
compensation .for the discharge qf
judicial duties by Mr. Dalton, as it!
was not certain_ the Dominion Gov-
eminent would pay him. Mr.;
Blake severely condemned such a.,
principle, and hoped the Ilouse wOulth
not beat about -the bush.in the way
proposed. , The Dominion should
pay for such services. The Attor-
ney -General gave' further explain,: g
ations, and appealed to the House
not to embarrass the Government
