England and 1.america-
Words frond Henry Ward-
..
Beecher.
TheChristiaii.UniGn(Mr.Beecher's
paper) is not much taken with the
President's Message. " Annex St.
Domingo by joint resmution, and
bring on the Melleninm7-suspend.
intetcourse with Canada:unless she
lets our fishermen alone' -pay the'
Alabama claims ourselves, and :hope
fer a settle...Lent with England after-
wards, -reform the revenue in the
intet ests of protection, -leave the
Indians to missionary agents," sap.
the Union, " arp its salient points."
And it aims a lengthy leader at
what -it characterizes as "a dema-
gogue's recent tirade against Eng -
l.
land," meaning,we suppose, the re
cent 'speech of Hon. • B. F. Butler,
which foreshes.dowed ,and intensified
t1 anti-British portions of the Mes-
sage. - Depreeating ;in none too
strong terms any rapture of the
present friendly relations with
land Mr. Beecher goes on to say:
As to the immediate subject of
difference between the two countries,
there are two things which it seems
to us are not sufficiently borne in
mind by Americans. The first is
that the Wrong on jEngland's part
which hurt, us most, iwas one that ad-
mits of ne tangible redress. That
wrong w....one to feeling. It was
not the loss of merchant' vessels, it
was not even the moral aid to the
Confedetate cause, that sank deep-
est ; it was the want of sympathy
from the people nearest to us in
blood in our hour of greatest trial
_Not the acts, but the spirit of un-
friendliness, sank deep, and still
rankles. Now, for such, a grievance,.
in the nature of things, there can be,
no specific and formal atonement4
Can we ask England, through her\
Cabinet or Arnbassador,,to make an
apology and ask pardon for not hav-
ing sympathized with us? Clearly
enough this wound -and it was a
deep one-naust be healed by far
different and more delicate means ;
and- the vague but strong expecta-
tion which prevails, that we 'can
some day and in same form get a
full requital from +he English Gov-
ernment for everything, is um eason-
able. For tangible injuries we cau
justly insist -on redress at their
hands ; fo-i the greater injury of
past -unfriendliness, ' we, can only
look for satisfaction in- a changed
sentiment toward us among the
whole English people. That such a
change has long been in bteady pro-
gress, we have abundant evidence ;
and it ought to- be int, on our part,
by a magnan;mity too large-hrearted
to dwell on an unchangeable past.
But over and beyond the whOle
question of England's past or pres-
era attitude toward us, there i, a
wider view to be taken. We see
net how any thoughtful "An can
fail to lecognize the fact that Eng
land is doing noble work for 'hu-
manity. . A higher spit -it lives in
her polities, her churches, her Social
movf.:ments, her literature, than Can
easily be found elsewhere. We in-
stinctively judge her, by a higher
moral standard than we apply to
her Continental neiglibm.S. She
is in character: fax nearer America,
than is alny other nation. Our free-
dom sprung from her freedom ; her
religion is our religion ; like hopes
andaspirations per V ade both peoples;
the same great teachers speak to
both from past ages ; the union of
race between us is not so closq as the
inner likeness of naturE. Let a ty-
pica.1 American and Eng,lishman
come together, and they find a whole
world ?f common. sympathies. The
differe*ces between thern. are -hardly
more than enoagh to intenFisfy their
mutual 'appreciation and enjoyment.
