THE MERCHANTS' SILT WELL. —The work, at
this well, is now, under the management of Mr.
Peter MeEwen, progressing most rapiely. Very
great difficulties were encountered at the outset,
in the shape Of boulders, etc.,- which !led a very
retarding effect. On the llth inst , however,
the drill was set to work in real earnest, since
which time every -thing has gone on like a charm,
and at time of writing a depth, of over 200 feet,
has been attained:. Mr. McEwen informs us
that the surface, was 36 feet 111 thicen' ess, and
was composed_ of clay, clay and boulders, gravel,
andebeulders. The rock has, so fax, been found
to be pre* uniform, varying only a little in
color. , The contract for the .1)oilieg shed, for
thesc -works, is lee, and is to be completed by the
1st of Deamber riext.
THE BAND. —In accordance with the advertise-
ment, a meeting were held in the Town: Hall, i
Seaforth, on Wedeesday evening last, for the
Purpose of oreenizing a Union l'ita443, between
Seaforth andeegmendville ; and; we are pleased
to know, the attempt resulted very sa,tisfactcaily.
A. band, with the above name, was organized,
compoeecl of four -teen -members; Mr. Elder was
electecitpresidenti Mr. Sernuel Jackson secretary,
end Mr. John Pyne treasurer., We hope that
our citrzens willrwhen the opportunity offers, as
offer it will, render it all the .aid within their
ability. The material, of which the band is com-
posed, is just the kind, to make a.n excellent af-
fair of it, if it be properly suppolted. We do not
think our Council week' go fax astray in making
it a reasonable grant of money. '

numbers of the N'ir eat merchants of thee village,
have :bee import g American silver in large
quantities Ithis fall for the purpose, dcnibtless, of
paying it cut to fa era as "change" instead of
using our wn. frac lona]. currency'. If the story
is, still, very re woul like to know
be true--ancl ray uth.ority thoulh not the best
whether they in ed. to pay it out atits legal

and ignorant at ipar? If the former—the only
honest way—why do they not use current funds?
If the latterra-which I cannot bdieveta-they might
as well pet their hands in the pockets of their
victims at once! I am sorry to find. Seaforth—
usually a-head—so far behind other places in ,the
matter of this American silver.' If it were gener-

value, for one month, the trouble would be at an
end. I am told by merchants, whom I speak to

accounts paid in i!" Suchj expressions are the
veryest nonsense. ! A man who owes a debt will
