Democracy in England.
A Democratic demonstration of the peo-
ple of London took place on Monday night,
in Trafalgar Square, and Wary one bf the
greatest popular assemblies ever seen in the
British capital. For neatly two hoard, the
streets leading to Clerkenwelli Bethnal
Green, and Holborn, ,were alive with suc-
cessive processions of -working men's -- socie- _ t
ties, and democratic associations, of the me-
tropolis, preceded by bands ofmusic and
illuminated by -torches and transparencies,
followed by repeated cheers - from the peo-
ple who thronged the sidewalks. Many
houses and shops -on the line of procession
were illuminated, and from the windo;vs of
many others were suspended the flags of
England, France and America. American.
flags were profusely displayed. By eight
o'clock Trafalgar square was one dense mass
of people, from the front 'of the National
Academy to around the statue of K ing
Charles. Perfect order prevailed along the
route of the procession and throughout the
proceedings of the evening. The banners
borne were inscribed with mottoes pro-
CHEDDER & STELTON CHEESE i
claiming time great declaration of " Libe> ty,
Equality, and Fraternity." One carried by
Ir, society from Hackney was inscribed,
" Ignited States of Europe ; Great United
States of America, with Peace on earth to
men of good will," and wes hailed with
rapturous and repeated `cheering. The
meeting was presided over by --Mr. IVlerri.
man, who made an effective speech, in the
course of Which he alluded to the fact that
while the London press ridicule ancl slight
the Republican movement in -England, to
which their own daily denunciations of the
worthlessness of - the Royal Family, give
constant encouragement and strength, the
Aerican press, three thousand miles away,
recognise its importance, and lend it the
moral support of its generous sympathy, as
the American Republic lends its priceless
sugport of a glorious and successful exam-
ple. These remarks were received with a TO BE HAD ONLY AT
perfect tempest of cheers for the - United
States. It is universally admitted that no SCOTT ROBERTSON'S.
such demonstration was ever before seen in.
London, and whatever may be; said, or left
unsaid by the London journals to belittle
and ic> - misrepresent, it . is considered by
thinking men to be the beginning of a po
litical: cha»ge, .for which the Government
of Mr. Gladstone has prepared theway, and
whioh it will sweep out of power if it fails
to accept and assist it. -
