The Huron Expositor, 1870-08-19, Page 8• It (Conducted Awn?. Fourth -Par") Paris, Aug. 15.—On the afternoon of ' yesterday, about four o'clock, a band of ,60 to 80 men, all armed with revolvers and poignarcls of exactly the same make as those previously seized, attacked the engine house on Boulevard Vilette. They attacked the guard with daggers and revolvers. One of the officers received a wound in the breast, and a fireman was vex./ seriously wounded by three bullets. Four guns kept at the station were taken away. Policemen of the 19th arrondisSement who ran to their aid, also received a volley. One fell dead instantly and others ware seriously watind-i ea. 4 AdviCes from Rome represent the soldiers of the Legion VAntibes anxious to join the armies of France. - The French residents are much affected by news of the reverses but the clerical autholities and partizans of the Pope seemed to rejoice and flock to the. new Prussian legation, where they are re- - ceived with unusual favor. The Opinione National computes • the forces for the defence of Paris at 1307000 men. Six hundred guns ale mounted.Saverne, Aug. 16.—The fortress of Mar - sal, and a small town, a little north-east of Nancy, have been captured by a body of Bavarian troops, after a short bombard- ment Sixty cannon were also captmed. . 'Verdun, Aug. 16.—No news from Metz. Nothing is known to have occurred to -day. All day yesterday the roar of cannon was heard between Metz and Verdun. Persons Avlio reached here from that direction say a great battle was fought, opening at day- break, and that the Prussians lost' filore than 40,000 men in the combat, and were completely defeated. PRUSSIAN REPORTS. Berlin, Aug. 9.—The Prussian Gazette protests against the attacks on England, whose just neutrality it approves. The. North German Gazette is grateful _ for the action of South Germany, and says. the Fed- eral Government will study to reward it. Hamburg, Aug. 8.—The river Elbe has been closed to prevent the entrance of• the French fleet, but a small passage is still left open for steamer traffic. • Stuttgardt, Aug. 1 2. --In the battle of Wcerth the First Corps of the Witrtemberg -contingent Jost 6 officers and 23 men killed, 257 wounded and 118 missing. At Gersweiler the Wurtemberg troops captured one Mitrailleur, three Cannons, one staff carriage, 2,200 prisoners and 500 liorsrs. •• Berlin, Aug. I2—The Queen announces she will taka personal charge .3f the wound- ed of both nations, and their treatment will be identical. A small vessel. which persisted in enter- ing the Jail& in spite of warnings of dan- ger, ran against a torpedo and was blown up The The crew were saved. Berlin, Aug. 14.—King William has his headquarters at Falquement, half way be- tween Metz and Saarbruck, on the railroad between those cities. A general order has been issued from the Royal Aheadquarters that tv,e3 francs be paid each, man daily as commutation of rations. • • Berlin, Aug. 15.—The Queen of Prussia to -day -received the following despatch from the King, dated. in tne vicinity of Metz, Sunday evening :-- "A victorious combat occurred near Metz to -day, the troops of the First and Seventh corps participating. I hasten to the scene of conflict." Berlin, Aug. 16.—The folloWing addi- tional particulars of the second battle near Metz were received late last night :—"Late oath& afternoon of Monday the 1st and 7th Prussian army corps vigorously attacked the french forces under the walls of Metz. A sanguinary conflict ensued. The French were at length driveu within the city, with • the loss of 4,000 men. On the sa ooe day a grand recconoissance, under King William, in person, maintained itself some hours within two lines of the French defences, without any effort on the part of the French to dislodge it. The fact shows an utter de- moralization .of the French." AMERICAN REPORTS. New York, Aug. 10.—A London speCial says letters from Metz speak in the most undistinguished way of the calamitous and fatuous incapacity of the Emperor. Mar- shal Le Bceuf and all the military dandies composing the military staff • of the army, 'have lost the confidence of the aimy, an.d a change in command was an absorute necessi- ty to prevent inntiny. There is no official news whatever of the whereabouts of the Prussian army. - It is stated that Gen. McMahon wanted some days before the battle to fire the for- ests in his front through which the Germans came down unexpectedly upon the French, - but the Emperor declined to authorize the step. Prussian officers and soldiers think slight- ly of the effectiveness of the Mitrailleur, but believe the Chassepot is a better wea- pon than the needle gun. New York,_.A.ug. 11.—A special from London, dated last evening says the latest official despatch, dated Metz, Aug. 9th, ev- ening, states that the Emperor that morn- ing went to the headquarters of Marshal Bazaine, who resumed the command of the troops concentrated at Metz. This is an in- direct way of contradicting the rwnor that Marshal Bazaine was to be made General - o of the Army of the Rhine. The Emperor is blind to his incompetency, 'and disregarding the universal outcry against it, will cling to the chief comma,nd of the army until another defeat- ipxhausts the national patienceire gives out that he will 'never return to Pails alive unless as a conquerer. General De Jeanis in command of the 3rd corps. The Emperor was well received. T. I New York, Ang. 11. --Another reverse • and th4 Emperor is gone. COnftdence in him is utterly destroyed. Rumors of fresh battles are flying around Paris, but no offi- 60 news- has been received. The ,French are being :most rapidly.- reinfoi eed,. and within a few days Paris will be almost de- nuded of young men. The popular devo- tion is for the country, and no longer for the dynasty; but everything looks to -day as if the Orleanists or a Republic would sue: ceed the Empire. Private letters say that Marshal McMa- hon's treasure chest, containing 1,500,00 francs in gold,; was captured by, the Prus- sians New York, Aug. 15.---A correspondent writing from Saarbruck says it was report- ed that Napokon ihad asked for an armistice, but was refused. t The Crown irince of Prussia, for his vic- tory at Weissq.bourg, has received the Or- der of the Iron Crown. By cable special to the Herald, dated London. 15th. --A despatch, from Forbach says: the French, while retreating to the west aide of the Moselle, were attacked by the Prussians under Gen. Steinmetz's com- mand. The French were thrown into great confusion, and atter a gallant stand were. routed by the Prussians. The slaughter was great. A • despatch - from Carlsrphe, says the Prussians now occupy Mulhausen and Besancon;100,000 of the landwehr are crossing the frontier. New Yerk, Aug. 16.—There is immense popular excitement in Paris, and great dit- ficulty in controlling the population Who are impressed With the belief That the Gov- ernment is resrosible for the disastrous eon. dition of affair; also, this correspondent has it on the best authority, from lk:ussel that the whole of the Belgian 'army is moving to the frontiers of Holland and Luxembourg. It is .supposed thatlm, lieutrality of both of these states is threatened by Prussia. A special despatch from London, 10.30, says :—The defeat of the Frbrich in the late battle is ratified. The Prussians numbei ed 60,000. Their loss was heavy, and the French loss was fearful. .46* Defeat of the French Ministry. LONDON, Aug i 11.—In the Corps Legis- latif on Tuesday, when the vote. was taken on the, questidn df, sustaining the MiniStry; only six voices were with M. 011ivier. The Tribune's Paris depatch, Tuesday night, (9th,) says no despatches can do jus- tice to the confusion and scandalous tu- mult in the Corps Legislatif. It was known in advance by many of the rnenibers that 4- ders had come from Metz to turn out 014 - vier .; the Eropeior seeking to propitafe Pa- ris by sacrificing the most unpopular and revonsible of his advisers. 011ivier him- self had not the least suspicion of his fate. He came smiling.into the Chamber only to leave it pale. ;terrified and ruined The same correspondent, after giving sokne ac- count of the tumultuous soenes in the Clarn- ber, says that thet incoming M.inistry is im- measurably worse than the outgoing; that the appointment is -a reckless defiance of public opinion, and that, nothing but a vic- tory can make it last a week. .An English banker, nalued Elliott, was arrested at Paris while on a visit to his bro- ther, charged with furnishing intelligence of French army movements to the enemy.
