THE HURON .r XPOS_ITO ..
ti
March 18, 1870.
(Continue4 from fourth me')
in the course of a further debate, in which
several members took part, Mr Young
pressed his amendment making proxies
terminable at one year. This, however,
was lost, and the amendments to the clause
as first proposed were agreed to. The
House then went on to discuss the further
amendments suggested, and did not rise till
after midnight.,
It is stated that the St. Patricks' Sociel7
of Montreal have sent invitations to the sev-
eral Irish
ev-6ralIrh societies in 'Ontario and Quebec
to co-operate with them on St. Patrick's
Day in petitioning the Government for the
release of the Fel-tint Prisoners at King-
ston, on the grounds that the law -has been
sufficiently vindicated, and the general good
feeling displayed by the Trish of Canada,
and the St. Patrick's Society in particular,
during the Fenian troubles, authorise 'it.
.._
'A strange rumour has found its way into
some of the Erelish journals, being to the
effect that the Queen is aaouc'to. marry a-
gain. It appears its. follows in a paper
called the "Latest News : "
Those of our readers who are not in the
secrets of the Palace will certainly ble star-
tled to hear the cause of time frequent visits
of the Prince of Augustenburg-Sonderburg
to Windsor. They will, in a few weeks, he
expiainad to her Majesty's loyal subjects in
a manner to cause them the highest satis
faction, and to withdraw our gracious
Queen from The privacy in - which she has
spent her widowhood."
The Port Hope Guide says : Tt is said
that Sir John A. Macdonaid's next pur-
chase will be Louis Riel. We have n.o
reason to doubt it. He would compare fa-
vorably with most of the lamed and spavined
political stock which the Premier has now
on band. He is as honest as Hincks, as
loyal and as happy as Howe, as clever as
Aikiris, ms white as Cartier, and, for aught
we know, astemperate and moral as the
_
immaculate Premier hiruself.' By all !Deans
let Riel be secured. Five thousand. a year
would flitch him, and it will probably cost
the country more than that to dispose of
him by force of arms. : Let all the traitors,
tricksters and pratical politicians be put in
the Government boat, and them scuttle her.
U you want good value for your money in

Mr. Gladstone's latest contribution to his
policy in the interest of justice to Ireland
has 1 eseived an extraordinary tribute to the
wisdom with which it has - been conceived
and elaborated, in a division which showed
442 members to be in _ favor of the second
reading of the Bill; and only 141 opposed to
it. Before the great perils to be encount-
ered in that country, and the absolute
necessity for some measure that should give
a sense of permanence and security to the
tillers of the soil,' party feeling has been all
but silenced. Doubtless. as its chief author
himself admitted, the scheme is yet imper-
fect. There would be no merit in reject-
ing amendments for its improvement, .from
either side of the House. The Lords will
probably try to make its state a ittle worse
than that in which it reaches their hands ;
but the success of the Irish land Bill is now
substantially secured.'
