and took quite an interest m her edu-
cation. lhey taught her to smoke a
pipe, to draw the cork from a soda bot
tie, after first carefully untwisting the
wire, aad then to drink the contents,
holding the bottle by the neck with
both hands, and liftisig up the bottom
of it with her foot to make the contents
run. into her mouth. The educatitin
which she thus received was no sham,
but was genuine, for Jenny would
really drink the soda -water and really
smoke the pipe, and not merely make
believe. She was also intrusted with
the charge of a chicken which the sail-
ors had on board for one of their pet.
Jenny took good care of this chicken in
her cage at night; and often carried it
anout in het arms during the dav.
The sailors, moreover, not properly ap-
preciating, it seems, the importance of
strict temperanre prieciplesfor monkeys
taught Jenny .* drink grog, of which
she learned to become immoderately
food.
At length, when in due time the
Ship returned to England, and the cons
piny separated, the ;tailors gave Jenov
which commenced flowing at a rate
reekoned at from 3000 to 4060 Ws.
flowing springs were discovered, and
what is more remarkable, ailake of pe-
trcleum from thirty to fort& yards
long, from ten to twelve wide, and.
from four to five in depth On tha
bank of the river, a vein of bitumen of
fine quality was found and a large. hill
of sea coral completely saturated with
petroleum. A letter from Gen. T.
H. Nelson, American Minister to
Mexico, written at the request of Dr.
Minfred, fn -PIX authenticated these
statements. Gen Neleon witneseed an
analysis of the pettoleum, :and testified.
that the result showed 44 oz. of oil_
from 48 oz, lof crude. The letter re-
ceived here on Senday confirms prev-
ious acconnts of the extraordinary
character of the discovery. and announ-
ces yet another wonderful discovery.
While awaiting the Shipment of ma-
