The Bill introduced by the Premier
a Ontario, on Friday last; is douhtless
'one a a most itsi portant character as af-
fecting the titles of hundreds of people
to the real estate they believe them-
selves to be the owners of, it having
came to them through priginal sales
made by sheriffs for taxete It is one
of the most delicate subjects upon
which to legislate, and the Attorney -
General's Bill will require a full and
thorough diecussion in the House be-
fore it he finally passed. That it tail/
be passed, in some form, is pretty sure,
for ail the parties in the House admit
the necessity for legislation on thiS sub-
.
ype tect ; but a law which shall remedy the
wronga complained of with regard to.
these sheriff rs titles, will, uoless most
eattetously and wisely framed, inllict
greater wrongs in many instances than
it is intended to redress. Mr. Blake

A Half-day at the Seaforth SehOol.
A few days since we. put an intention
we have long had into practire, by vis-
iting the Seaforth School, confining it,
however, for that time to thetsenior de-
partment; under the tuition of the Prin-
cipal, Mr: Dewar. On- entering the
_room the businessin hand—reviewing—
satisfied us that the teacher practised
one moist commendable thing. Some
people may think that to occupy one-
fifth of a schol-ar's time in reviewing the
work of the other four-fifths is putting
too much of a clog on progress.; but to
such we would recommend that they
call on any of our schools that review
on that clay, and they vroulcl very quick-
ly perceive that, in the majority ofcases
it is the only course to pursne in order
to secure any progress at all, for be it
remembered, that progress only can be,I
s- applied where thoroughness also obtains,
and while, reviewing is generally essen-
tial, we believe, it is in no case prejudi-
cial ; therefcre we hope to see, at -least,

Some members of this class acquitted.
themselves most creditably. The les-
sons were those treating of the early
part of the Norman Dynasty, and in
the main a very gond general knowledge
of the fact., of those times appeared to
be posse.ssed by the class.
CIEOGRAPHY.
The only successful plan that, VT be-
lieve, can be adopted for inculcating
this •branch of education, namely, map
teaching with . historical notices of the
places under consideratien, is practised
by. Mr. Dewar. The old fashioned idea
of studying geography exclusively from
books and at the time of recitation,
shutting off from sight every thing in
the she pe of a map or chart, has pretty
generally extdoded.
MATHEMATICS.
III this department, which we -new
treat as including Arithematie, 9.1ge-
ore, and Orconict-y, w thinl tu t the
school eally excels. The ease with
which the scplare roots of involved al-
gebraical quantities were extracted bY
lads of ten to fourteen tt ears, was great-
er than is oLtea witnessed when more
pretentious persons perform the same
operations. In geometry the perfor-
mances were very noticeable. We un-
dersta,nd that it has only tecently been
introduced, and many of the scholars
appear. to 'thor-mghly comprehend the
nature of the study, having the defini-
tions, postulates and axioms at their
tongues' ends.
GENERAL REMARKS
Notwithstanding the excellency. ma
eifested in moi‘e ways than one by the
scholars of this school, there is one bad
fatttre very obvious—the lessons are
mainly, if not wholly, prepared during
School hours. The objections to such
a system are numerous, the rincipal,
and the only oaei wnich we shall now
mention, is the waste of time. This we
consider to be of p:trawount import-
ance, and one, the oveecomint of which,
should engage the attention of all par-
ents and guardian. Need we, tell
those very persons that they are the
responsible parties for the existence of
snob a state of affairs. It is a lack of
home influence in the right direction ;
parents do not second the efforts of the
teacher.
