School Agi3
From theStratford Beacon.
A writer in an American pater,
called the Methodist, speaks of the evils,
chiefly in a sanitary point of view, as
affeeting the health of the pupils, of
sending children to school attoo early
an age, and in this -respect, though
perhaps unconsciously, following in the
wake of the discussion of the subject at
the late teachers' convention in
foronte. We believe that there is littie
gained, but a good deal seedbed by
-
making the minimuth school age in
Ontario five year,. The association
of teaebers consider that it should be
six years, and we consider that period
'trite, soca enough. The brain in
early childhood should be kept fallow;
'net like a ho' -bed be constantly forced.
"The mischief,” says the writer alluded.
to, "p6rpetrated by a: c‘mtrary course,
in the shape. of bad health, peevish
temper, and developed vanity-, is in-
curable. Some infant prodigy, which
is a stan'dard of mischief throughout RS
neighborhuod, misleads them. Bat pae
ents may be assured that this early
work is not, by any means, all gain, even -
in the way of work-. We suspect it iS.4

dacation late.* as it would be called

(From our own Correspondent)
THE Blitnshard A gricul tural So ..iety
will bold its annual show in Kirkton
on the 10th of October. This Society
has been organized this season; the in-
habitants of this district feeling them-
selves too ninth isolated from any eth-

of the matter and have organized. quite
respeutable' society. May all ouch
prosper. . -
Caotis in this rteighbourhood

considering the very cold, wet season.
Harvesting has been protracted to a
most unreasonable length by the rains,
and there is quite a quantity of grain
still standing out. There is a cry out
about the potato crop, ; the rot seems
to threaten a famine in that department.
Fruit is Ufily a very small crop not be-
ing up to the average.

till well on in the afternoota There
were 11 combatants on ealla side. The
challenge had 'been given by the Wrox

on each side; The loosing party to pay
the dinners for the whole, Which res-

a majority of 54. The Belmere men
acquitted themselves with credit in' ev-

they practice a little between this, and

THE TEA MEETING OF THE M. R
