A Mountain of Salt.
• '1
A California paper says that in the
Pahnggar district, in southern et'rtida,
about 'one hundred and eighty miles
from Austin, is a remarkable •moun-
tain of pure salt, seventy miles south
of the silver mines. It is about five
,-aniles long and six hundred feet, high.'
The body of the mountain crystal salt,
of unknown depth. The salt is chemi-
cally pure, does .eot deliquesce when
exposed to the atmosphere, require
• blasting like rock, and is SA transpar-
ent as glass. It could' be mined with
almost no cost; and, if transportat ou
was provided, could zpupply the tonti-
• Bent. We have been shown a brick of.
crystal salt cut from this mountain
with an ordinary jack-knife. • It re-
sernbles, exactly, in .appearance, a block
of clear glass. It is the purest crystal
oat we ever saw, s nvery hard, appears
free from all impurities, except a very
trifle of al WTI ; and we are assured
that, without any prepara•ion what -
weer except creshing, it will preserve
meat, equal to the choicest salt known
to commerce. The only use made of it,
.aio far, except the - trifle constaned by
miners and hunters for table purposes,
is as a flex for reducing certain ores,
but, if a railroad were built to connect
It with the civilized world, it would
Supply at once the whole Pacific coast.
.At present it is. one of the natural
• wonders of an almost unexplored wil-
derness. We are told that one face of
the mountain, where the "Salt is par-
' -gaily exposed, flashes in the sunlight
like an enormous diamond, and is

THE ALARMING INCREASE OF WOMEN.
—The so3ial science :philosophers of.
Great Britain aiv becoming alarmed.
They have discovered that the dis-
proporti m between men and women is
increasing SO rapidly in that country as
to threaten an. cverwhelming redun-
dancy .of the feminine gender The
statistics appal them. Out of every
.100 women ni Great Britain above 20
yews of age it 'has been ascertained
that 47 are wives, 13 widows,' and 30
spinsters. Of whale under 3;000,000
women, between 30 and 40, in England
and Wales, 1,248,000 were unmarried.
the English philosophers recommended
a wholesale hegiras of • females to the
United States ; but this would not help
them much, as there is _large excess of

ANOTHER WONDERFUL CURE OF
• CONSUMPTION IN CANADA.
• MESSES You & CR4MI3ERLIN,—S re, I
feel it a duty I owe to you, as well as to the
public to inform you of the most wonderful
pure of Consumption, accomplished in my
person, by the use of the Great Shoshonees
Remedy and. Pills. I coughed a great deal
day and night, expectorating a great quanti-
ty of matter, and had a great pain about my
left lung. I had cold chills every day, and
severe night sweats „every night, and between
the racking cough and great sweating, I was
almost deprived of sleep; by these miseries
as well as the loss of appetite, I was io
ie-
duced that I could hardly stand alone. I
was under the care of a physician for a
length of time, and finding no riief, I
tried different reeeipes, but all withotit any
good effect Squire Peterson of Bath, re-
commended me to use the Great Shoshonees
Remedy, I procured three bottles at once,
with the Pills, so soon as I commenced using
it I began to get better, and when I had fin*
jailed:this complement, the cough, expectera-
tan of matter, pain about the lung, chills,
sweating, &c., left the, and by i continuing
its use I became strong and healthy. It is
now over two months since I quit the reme-
dy, and -there have been no symptoms of the
.disease returning, and I have been, and am
now, healthier and better than I have beep
for years. 1 truseyou will make this known
to the public, that they may be aware of the
peculiar virtues of this :truly -wonderful In-
dian Remedy. - /
