THE fact that
the notes of the Royal
Canadian are taken at par by traders in
Toronto, is a striking commentary on
the character of our present banking
syste which spears for itself, and in-
stead , of injuring the prospects or de-
feating the attempt now being made to
substitute Government indebtedness,for
told, w'li- convince our, legislators that

A NUMBER' of the shareholders of the
Royal Canadian Bank met in Toronto
au Saturday last, to consider what steps
'should
be taken in the interests of the
Bank. .Aid. Manning was present, and
made statements which went to. show
that the present state of the .Bank was
not .as bad as had been represented. It
was stated that it was the intention of
the directors to appoint a Committee of
Investigation—some two or three gen-
tlemen
b
tlernen of repute and good standing—
to examine into the state of the Bank's
affairs, and make report of the result
of their examen ion at the approaching
annual meeting * It was also stated
that the Directors intended 'to apply to
Parliament for is short eAce to enable
them, if it should be considered neces-
sary, to amalgamate. with another bank,
or sell out, or make such other disposi-
tion of ` the property of the Bank as
would prevent its being eaten up by
e slow process q liquidation. It
was not thought, ho ever, that any sty h
sale nr amal'garnatio i would be found
ne-essery.--- Ilamitton Times.
