The Expositor, 1869-05-21, Page 8sound of Telegraph Wires. As to the cense of the sounds frequen- tly heard to proceed from, the 'wires in' the open_ an, it has been customary to accept the wind, and its producing the sonqing by direct vibration, similar to those of the Aeolian harp. A different view of it, however, is given bei a rail: read officer in the Austrian ltailway • Gazette. He calls observation to the fact that onee-who gives his close attention to both the wires and sounds will find that 'the latter nia,ke their appearance like- wise where there is a total .absence of wind ; and in. .a quiet in winter, when the wires appear covered with frost to the thickness Of• a finger, they never- theless carried on lively vibrations and swinging' , while the eir was totally quiet. The observer had noticed this - for eighteen years past, and at last was led to the real cause of the .phenome- na. According to him, therefore, the Vi- brations are not due to the 'changes of atmospheric temperature, and especially thre the _action of cold, as lowering of ° friction is produced on the supporting ' bells, and thus gives the explanation for the sounding both in the wires and the poles. This explanation also coneurs , with the fact that poles bearing but , . - one or a few wires give off far louder sounds , than when loaded with many; because in the latter case the vibrations produced must be less uniform and si- multaneous.- ..MOORISH, AND TOIRDO SWORDS.—All readers of Eastern and mediaeval hist- ory -or romance, have observed the de- votion with which the warrior seems to have regarded. his tsword, a devotion which re4krabled rather a personal at- tachment by which enemies might be OverthrOwn, and his own reputation for courage maintained. . A. writer in Chambers' Journal explains this . in' some degree. He has -visited, the Ar- eneria .at.nMadrid, whereeve collected I all the warlike weapons Vamous in Spanish history—those wielded. by -her own great warriors, and those captured from valient fees. , " H istary,"• he says, " seems to start intolife as you gaze on that longprocessionof weapons, which laings- you down from the ninth centu- ry to the present day, over epoehs; ie- •" pleVe with, disaster, defeat, or .with vie - tory tand glory.
