Community of local churches gather to celebrate

THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT
THAMES ROAD - Dec. 21 church ser-
vice: Rev. Judith Ritchie was in charge of
Advent 4 church service on Dec. 21. Rev.
Judith lit the Peace candle.
Everyone sang the opening hymn Hope
Is A Star.
Rev. Judith gave words of welcome and
everyone passed the Peace. There were
six ladies who came in dressed as clowns
which added to the service. The introit A
Candle Is Burning was sung by everyone.
Rev. Judith led in the call to worship re-
sponsively and everyone read the opening
prayer. Rev. Judith read The Old Testament
Lesson 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16. Psalm 89 was
read responsively. The choir sang The Joy
of Christmas accompanied by the pianist
Jean Hodgert. Kaylee Geiger, Evan Geiger,
Tatianna Hamilton, and Katelyn Parsons
lit the candles in the advent wreath with
the assistance of Rev. Judith and Samantha
Ritchie. The candles were for hope, peace,
joy and love.
The Lord s Prayer was sung in unison. Rev.
Judith s message was entitled Clowning
Around. Songs that were used as part of
the message were: Deck the Halls, We Three
Kings, What Child is This, Hark the Herald
Angels Sing.
Emerson Beal was the baby Jesus. Ash-
ley McKnight and Zachary Kadey were the
readers. The letters of the word Christmas
were held up by the Sunday School chil-
dren and then they sang Silent Night, Holy
Night, namely Kaylee Geiger, Evan Geiger,
Tatianna Hamilton and Katelyn Parsons
under the leadership of Beth Cooper.
Everyone sang the hymn Joy to the World
verses one and three and read the Affirma-
tion of our Faith A New Creed.
Ruth Anne Osgood and Marianne Veld -
man received the offering. The Doxology
was sung and everyone read the offertory
prayer. Rev. Judith gave the announce-
ments. The prayers of the people were
read responsively. Everyone sang verses
2 and 4 of Joy to the World.
Happy Birthday was sung to Zach Kadey
whose birthday is Dec. 22.
Rev. Judith gave the commissioning and
pronounced the benediction. Everyone
sang the choral benediction.
Thanks to the participants of this service:
the children of the Sunday School, Beth
Cooper, Helen Kadey, Karen Etherington,
Sheila Hamilton, Virginia Warwick, Melo-
nie Miller, Samantha Ritchie, Zachery
Kadey and Ashley McKnight.
Announcements
Rev. Judith will be away from Jan. 14 - 30
2009.

p.m. followed by church council meeting
at 8:15 p.m.
Jan. 11 Committee reports are due to
Sharon Lynn for the annual report. The
annual meeting will be Feb. 1, 2009, (snow
date Feb. 8, 2009.)
Church service Dec. 24
Rev. Judith Ritchie was in charge of the
Christmas Eve Family service and the cel-
ebration of Communion church service on
Wednesday evening.
Rev. Judith lit the Peace candle and ev-
eryone sang the hymn 0 Come All Ye Faith-
ful. Rev. Judith gave words of welcome
and everyone passed the Peace. The Introit
A Candle Is Burning was sung.
Rev. Judith led in the call to worship in
unison and everyone read the opening
prayer in unison and The Lord s Prayer was
sung by everyone.
The candles in the advent wreath for joy,
peace, hope, love and the Christ candle
were lit by Mitchell Rowcliffe, Justin Pym,
Tatianna Hamilton, Sydney Rowcliffe and
Evan Geiger.
The children s choir under the leadership
of Beth Cooper sang Away In A Manger and
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star accompanied by
the pianist Marilyn Vandenbussche.
Rev. Judith read the Old Testament Les-
son Isaiah 2 - 7 The Future King . The
choir sang News In Bethlehem Town accom-
panied by a CD.
Psalm 96 was read responsively. Verse 1
of 0 Little Town of Bethlehem was sung.
The story A Shared Journey was read
by Rev. Judith and Samantha Ritchie (The
Holy Family- played by Rich and Rebecca
Heessels with Jake Heessels as the baby
Jesus). Verses one, three and six were sung
of hymn While Shepherds Watched Their
Flocks.
The Gospel Lesson Luke 2:1-20 was read
by Samantha Ritchie. Verses 1 and 3 of
Angels We Have Heard on High was sung.
A Christmas Affirmation of our Faith was
read in unison.
Rev. Judith gave the Invitation for com-
munion. The communion hymn Infant
Holy was sung.
Remembering with thankful-
ness
(Responsive) Retelling the story with
Rev. Judith as the leader.
Beatrice Dawson, Melonie Miller, Judith
Parker and Marianne Veldman served
Communion and everyone read the prayer
of communion.
Marianne Veldman and her daughter re-
ceived the offering. The Doxology was sung
and everyone read the offering prayer.
Verse one of Silent Night was sung twice
as everyone had a lit candle around the
sanctuary of the church.
Rev. Judith gave the commissioning and
pronounced the benediction and everyone
sang We Wish You a Merry Christmas and A
Happy New Year which brought a very im-
pressive service to a close.
Sympathy of the community is extend-
ed to Grace Pym and family in the recent
passing of her sister.
Community of Local United
Churches
Brenda Hern welcomed the congre-
gations of Woodham, Kirkton, Thames
Road-Elimville and Centralia to Zion West
United Church on Sunday for the joint
worship service.
With Margaret Hern as pianist, the ser-
vice opened with the singing of Joy To the
World. Bill Denham introduced the Agri
-Tones, A male quartet from the Ilderton-
Bryanston area. Members are Ken Nixon,
Ron McRae, Ron Smith and Floyd Wills,
accompanied by pianist Margaret Smith.
Their first musical selection was Surely The
Presence of The Lord is In This Place followed
by In That Getting Up Morning and Corner-
stone.
Dave Williams read the Scripture: Luke
2:22-40. The Agri -Tones presented Still a
Bach Christmas, Gentle Shepherd conclud-
ing with Let There Be Peace On Earth. Judy
Mills thanked the men for coming and
sharing their musical talent.
The service concluded with the singing
of Go Tell It On the Mountain. Helen Kadey
gave the benediction followed by grace.
Lunch was served by the CLUC commit-
tee and a time of fellowship brought a
heartwarming service to close.

Fundraiser for
dyslexic children
EXETER An open house in Exeter
this weekend will give visitors a chance
to help children with dyslexia and the op-
portunity to see some interesting decora-
tions.
Order of the Eastern Star of Ontario
Worthy Grand Matron Jeanie Lee and
her husband Murray are holding an open
house this weekend at their home at 500
Huron St. E (the 911 number at the front
of the house is 40320). The event is a
fundraiser for dyslexic children through
the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation.
Jeanie Lee said the nearest school to Ex-
eter funded through the foundation is the
Learning Centre in London.
Visitors to Lee s home will visit 12 dif-
ferent rooms, all with their own theme
and including 12 full-sized decorated
themes. Lee will also have her great
grandmother s and her grandmother s
wedding dresses on display as well as
christening dresses.
Coffee and cookies will also be served.
Free will donations will be accepted.
Hours for the open house are Friday
from 4 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday
from noon to 9 p.m.
