Wednesday, December 31, 2008 Times -Advocate 13 SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 3 • The new Lucan Muse- um will be completed this week, according to Lucan Heritage treasurer Sheila Hodgins. "The museum will be completed by K&L Con- struction of Hyde Park the first week of September and is looking great," says Hodgins, who adds, "It was our goal right from the beginning to have our new museum blend in with all the other buildings on the Main Street and this has been achieved. It has been a lot of years in the workings and a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work on the part of many people in the community to get to this point in time but well worth it to see such a superb building." SEPTEMBER 10 • Mayor Ken Oke said the municipality's recent meetings in Ottawa to dis- cuss funding for two proj- ects were "positive." The municipality recently attended the annual As- sociation of Municipalities of Ontario meeting in the nation's capital, and used their time to talk with pro- vincial Minister of Energy and Infrastructure George Smitherman and with the staff of federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Law- rence Cannon. SEPTEMBER 17 • A full house at the Hen- sall Community Centre Sept. 10 finally heard how much they will pay for the pipeline to bring water to the village, but left unsat- isfied with the lack of in- formation provided on the GreenField Ethanol part of the project. Residents were told at the meeting they would have to make a lump sum payment of $8,840 by Dec. 31 or multiple payments over the next 20 years that would amount to $15,120. SEPTEMBER 24 • It's one of the oldest businesses in the area and possibly the only fourth- generation family-owned shoe retailer in the country. Wuerth's Shoes is cel- ebrating its 70th anniversa- ry this year and finds itself moving into the foot health care field as the business evolves. Current president John Wuerth's grandfather, Alfred, started the business in Hensall in 1937, after learning the shoe repair trade in Crediton as a boy. Marg Hayter lit the fourth candle of love. Christmas Eve service was Dec. 24 in Varna Church. Geraldine Eckel lit the advent candles as well as the Christ candle. The birth of Jesus was told through Scripture and drama. Scripture readings were read by Linda Keys, Shirley Hill, Gordon Hill, Jacob Govier and Colin Snyder. Special thanks to everyone for coming and also to all who participated in the service. Sympathy goes out to Sandra and David Turner and their family on the sudden pass- ing of Sandra's mother Audrey Abbot. Church will be in Goshen on Sunday and the Sunday School awards will be presented during the service. Our Sunday School is growing! Additional volunteers are needed so that two are avail- able each week. One is needed to teach the older children and the other one to entertain the pre-schoolers. Some gently used toys suit- able for the pre-schoolers, as well as a rug or piece of carpet for them to play on would also be greatly appreciated. If you can help out with any of these needs, please contact Mildred McAsh at 233-9236. Anyone wanting to participate in Confirmation Classes or small group gather- ings in the new year contact Colin as soon as possible. The Varna Crokinole Club met Dec. 15 for singles play.
