JUNE JUNE 4 • Research done recently at South Huron Hospital shows patients arriving at the hospital suffering from an acute heart attack are re- ceiving "very good and timely care," according to the doctor who led the study. Dr. Ken Milne said last week the "gold standard" for treating a patient suffering a heart attack with a life-saving clot busting drug is 30 minutes. While studies have shown that this goal is not being met across Canada, a study led by Milne last fall shows South Hu- ron Hospital and Goderich's Alexandra Marine and General Hospi- tal are meeting and exceeding the goal. • After over 50 years in business, the chain of 126 SAAN stores across Canada, including the location in Exeter at 193 Main St. S., will close over the next eight to 10 weeks. The announcement was made by the Great American Group, which said the going -out -of -business sale will be conducted by a joint venture group of Great American Group and Hudson Capital Partners. JUNE 11 • That brand new, multi-million dollar water pipeline from Lake Huron to Exeter is going to mean increased water bills for local resi- dents. Under the new draft rates, average annual water / sewage bills in Exeter are slated to jump from the current $758 to $1,123. In Stephen, the average will jump from an average current bill of $764 to $811. The new proposed rates haven't been formally accepted by coun- cil yet and two public meetings will be held before council votes on the rates. • "I couldn't believe it," says Clandeboye resident Jennifer Day - man, who watched from the kitchen as her patio furniture went fly- ing across the backyard during Sunday's tornado. "I was home cooking supper and the patio furniture and the tram- poline went flying by the window," adds Dayman, saying she went outside where it was extremely windy, saw a funnel cloud and took off barefoot down the street. Dayman, who was home alone at the time, ran down the street to inform her husband Jerry and daughter Cassandra. "I was thinking 'Oh my god,'" says Dayman, adding, "I couldn't believe it." JUNE 18 • Police are investigating vandalism at the MacNaughton Trail after a large entrance kiosk was cut down off its posts and pushed upside down into an adjacent field. South Huron staff alerted police Sunday after discovering the South Huron Reunion entrance kiosk vandalized. The kiosk, situ- ated behind South Huron Rec Centre on the MacNaughton Trail, was donated with the proceeds from the South Huron District High School Reunion and built by high school students. JUNE 25 • South Huron Hospital's brand new emergency department was unveiled with an official ribbon cutting and ceremony Monday morning. The celebration of the new ER marked a new era for the hospital, which hadn't seen a major renovation since the 1970s. Hospital staff, volunteers, politicians and donors to the project attended Monday's festivities, which included guest speakers and tours of the new fa- cility South Huron's fundraising campaign saw donations exceed the goal of $1.6 million, with $1.3 million going towards a new Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS), a program that allows patient x-rays and ultrasounds to be viewed by other medical pro- fessionals at other hospitals. The remaining $300,000 went towards new equipment, while the Ministry of Health provided a grant of $1 million for the emergency department renovation and upgrades.
