Sun dl; Life Financial 2008: Year in review EXETER As we publish our last issue of 2008 and look forward to a new year, this week s Times -Advo- cate will review the biggest headlines of the past 12 months. Another chapter in the tragic July 2007 murders of Mount Carmel s Bill and Helene Regier was closed, as Jesse Imeson pleaded guilty to second degree murder for the killing of the Regiers as well as Carlos Rivera of Windsor. Imeson appeared in Goderich court Oct. 27 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison with no chance of pa- role. Other stories in our year in review issue include: • Huron County didn't escape the global economic crisis as there were local plant closures, notably CanGro in Exeter and Volvo in Goderich. Exeter Saan closed, but then re -opened as a Bargain Shop store. Annex Publish- ing closed its Exeter location and relocated to Simcoe. On the good news front, Goderich Aircraft in Huron Park is expanding. • At South Huron council, the most controversial issue of the year was the new increased water rates resulting from the $13.4 million Lake Huron water pipeline. Pub- lic meetings were well attended, with most ratepayers speaking out against the proposed increases. The T -A also received numerous letters to the editor in opposi- tion to the new rates. The rates were eventually passed by council and will come into effect in January. In addition to water issues, the Crediton/Centralia sewer project was also in the news, with residents pack- ing a council meeting to express their displeasure over the lack of time they were given to decide whether or not they would pay their sewer fee in full or enter into a 20- year debenture program. • The much-discussed ethanol plant in Hensall con- tinues to be delayed, although GreenField Ethanol maintains the plant will still go ahead. John Creighton of GreenField Ethanol told Bluewater council in No- vember that a credit shortage meant the company had to build a Johnstown plant before building the Hensall plant, despite an original plan to build both at the same time. • Fundraising at South Huron Hospital was "an over- whelming success," according to hospital CEO Deb Hunt, who unveiled the newly renovated emergency department at the hospital in June. • On the political front, Huron -Bruce has new lead- ership in Ottawa as Conservative Ben Lobb defeated Liberal candidate Greg McClinchey in the October fed- eral election. Lobb replaces longtime Liberal MP Paul Steckle, who earlier announced his retirement. South Huron Mayor Ken Oke was chosen county war- den in December and will hold the post for a year. • There was good news from Lucan as construction on the new museum was finished in September. Interior work will take place over the winter, with a planned spring 2009 opening. These stories and more can be found inside the pages of this week s T -A.
