Wednesday, December 24, 2008 Times -Advocate 19 SPORTS LEISURE Lucan Irish suffer consecutive losses to division rivals By Ben Forrest TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF PARKHILL The Lucan Irish lost 3-1 to the North Mid- dlesex Stars Sunday and dropped a 5-3 decision Dec.17 against the division -leading Mt. Brydges Bulldogs. Lucan remains behind both teams in the standings as a result, lodged in third place in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League s Yeck Conference. Against North Middlesex the Stars opened the scoring in the first period, a goal that was answered by Lucan in the second period. North Middlesex added two goals in the third period, leaving the score 3-1 in their favour. I was really pleased with our team, said Irish coach Russ Morningstar shortly after the game. We were missing seven guys out of our lineup so we only had two and a half lines and four (defence - men), so we were pretty depleted. But I thought we competed hard and the guys played with a lot of heart and dedication. I think we did a pretty good job for what we had. Fatigue may have been a factor late in the game, Morningstar said The loose pucks were there and we just couldn t get to them. We were pretty tired. As for Lucan s place in the standings, Morning- star said the team has never been that concerned about it. It s always nice, yes, to have that home ice ad- vantage (in the playoffs), he said. But I think if you re feeling comfortable with your players and comfortable with the way they re playing ... it shouldn t really matter too much who you re going to play and what spot you landed in. Against Mt. Brydges, Irish forward Nick Engel opened the scoring with a power play goal 7:09 into the first period. Mt. Brydges fought back, tying the game 13:34 into the period and adding two more goals in the ensuing three and a half minutes. Neither team scored again until nearly eight min- utes into the second period, when Mt. Brydges' Adam Fletcher netted a shorthanded goal. Lucan's Kevin Dean scored with roughly 2:30 re- maining in the frame, and the third period saw no scoring until the final 90 seconds, when Irish for- ward Dustin McTaggart found the net. Brydges scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal with 30 seconds remaining, leaving the score 5-3. Morningstar said he felt his team played a good game against Mt. Brydges except for a brief stretch in the first period that saw them surrender three goals. That really hurt us, obviously, and when Mt. Brydges is up by a couple of goals, they re a pretty tough club to come back (against), he said. Still, Morningstar said his team is coming closer to put- ting in a consistent effort for complete games, something that was not true earlier this season. We started the season only playing maybe 20 minutes out of 60, he said. I think now we re up to between 40 and 50 minutes of hockey. When we play a full 60 we do very well and when we don t it obviously shows, like games against Mt. Brydges three goals in five minutes ... you can t let good teams do that to you. It will cost you. Morningstar said the team has improved in different ar- eas over the course of the season, though he feels the Irish need to generate more offence. They say good defence leads to offence, but that s some- times our Achilles heel: we just need to find ways to put the pucks in the net a little more often, he said. The Irish do not play again until Jan. 2, when they host North Middlesex at the Lucan arena.
