Exeter jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with goals from Nathan Doan, Shaun Clinton and Tyson Clin- ton. The Mohawks added three more goals in the first five minutes of the second period as Scott Davies, J.R. Davies and Pat Dobie found the net. Mohawks goalie Justin Hayter had 46 saves in the win. The guys were ready to come out flying and play a full 60 (minutes), said Mohawks coach Mark Livermore. We ended up doing that, and we came up with a big two points. The game was well in hand heading into the final period and Livermore said he told his squad to play smart -de- fensive -minded hockey before the third period began. We didn t need any more goals, he said in an interview after the game. We wanted to win the period we re not going to say we didn t. Anything can happen, but we felt the game was (in) hand by then, and (wanted to) just play smart, defensive hockey and shut them down. Livermore said his squad was getting the breaks all night, something that was less true of Goderich. They weren t getting those bounces or capitalizing on their opportunities, he said. He added the flurry of Exeter goals early in the second period may have deflated Goderich. They couldn t get back in the game after that, he said. Livermore praised Hayter, though he suggested Goder- ich had few scoring chances until the third period. He saw a lot of shots ... but a lot of them were on the perimeter of the ice, Livermore said. There wasn t a lot of close -in -type chances ... but he saw the puck well and did a good job. Getting off to a strong start in the first period was the key to victory, Livermore said. He noted the Mohawks squandered a 3-0 lead last week against Clinton and weren t about to do it again. We ve been in that situation before and we knew to- night getting that lead ... we weren t going to relinquish it, he said. Enforcer Adam McCann, added to the Mohawks three or four games ago, logged heavy minutes in the game and adds a physical presence that will be needed come playoff time, said Livermore. Adam brings a big physical presence and knows his role to protect our offensive players, Livermore said. Our guys feel a lot more comfortable when he s out on the ice. He s a defenceman by trade but he can play forward if we want him to. We didn t have that physical threat until we got him. The first few months of the season have been a mixed bag for the Mohawks, resulting in a sub -.500 record and a tie with Goderich for seventh place in the WOAA Senior Men s Hockey League South Division. January will feature six games for the Mohawks, and Livermore said the team hopes to have a .500 record that month. We want to go (into the playoffs) on a good streak with everybody rolling, he said. Hopefully we get some bod- ies back in the lineup and get some full lineups. That s what we want going into January and into February. There are tough games ahead, including battles with league -leading Petrolia, fourth place Clinton and third Stone cold Exeter Mohawks goalie Justin Hayter readies himself before making one of 46 saves during Fridays game against Goderich. We re expecting good things if we get everybody out, Livermore said. I m expecting going on a roll into Febru- ary. That s what I m hoping for, anyway. Injury woes continue to hinder beleaguered Exeter Hawks By Ben Forrest TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF MT. BRYDGES The Exeter Hawks travelled to Mt. Brydges Saturday to face the division -leading Mt. Brydges Bulldogs, losing the game 5-3. Mt. Brydges opened the scoring roughly 13 minutes into the first period and shut out the Hawks in the first 20 minutes of play. Third -year Hawk Brandon Dymond put Exeter on the board early in the second pe- riod, though Mt. Brydges answered with two goals late in the frame, leaving the score 3-1 in their favour after 40 minutes. The Bulldogs scored again mid -way through the third period before Exeter s Brandon Babbage netted his first of the game with 5:03 remaining. Mt. Brydges scored again with 3:49 re- maining while Hawks forward Scott Muir - head notched the game s final goal on a power play with 37 seconds remaining. Hawks coach Jamie Pearce said his team played better Saturday than it did last week against Mt. Brydges, when they lost 7-3. Injuries continue to dog the team, how- ever: the team dressed only 13 skaters for Saturday s game and two defencemen Shayne Mudge and Nathan Kinsman were lost to injury before the contest end- ed. The Hawks made do with two lines, four defencemen and an extra player who kind of played everywhere, Pearce said. Still, fatigue was not a major factor, Pearce said. That was actually one thing that didn t affect us a lot, he said. I think our team is in pretty good condition. They were tired, they made a few mistakes because of that, but they worked as hard as they ve worked all year. In general, Pearce said he was happy with the team s effort. They kind of jumped up and took things and didn t let it get away, he said. There was chances where we could have let them just run all over us, and we didn t do that. Pearce noted both Mt. Brydges and Ex- eter netted two power play goals, and cited the Exeter defence as a key to the Mt. Bry- dges victory. Defence has been a concern of Pearce s for much of the season, and it remains so, he said. Another area of concern is the team s power play, which Pearce said he is not close to being pleased with. It s very disorganized, he said. It s something that we do have to work on a little bit. Pearce said both the power play and pen- alty killing will Minor hockey scores South Huron Tyke Dec. 15 South Huron (5) vs. Mt. With only having one practice every week it s something you really need to work on, because you do spend a third of the game doing that, he said. He added that on -ice conditioning will be another major focus over the holidays. Heading into Christmas, Pearce said his wish list is to be injury -free, and he antici- pates a few players may be back in time for this Saturday s game against the North Middlesex Stars. I m looking at having at least four of them back for next weekend as many as five or six, he said. That depends on what happens with Nathan Kinsman and Shane Mudge what their prognosis is at this time. At least two forwards and two defence - men are expected to be back in the lineup for Saturday s game. ,woo h, „6 94 )07 CO)4:t, • JOIN IRONWOOD before Ian. 15, 2009 AND BEAT THE PRICE INCREASE Adult Couple Restricted Adult Restricted Couple Weekday Weekday Couple Intermediate Full Student Extra Child Hooky $1,152 + GST $1,775 + GST $1,017 + GST $1,677 + GST $887 + GST $1,495 + GST $584 + GST $427 + GST $213 + GST $629 + GST Memberships, gift certificates and our pre -wrapped Christmas gift boxes for $55, $100 & $150 are available at our winter location. so'rtnO ti Ge 92 Main St. S.
