Municipal clerk retires from South Huron
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON This week
marks the last for Sandi Strang as
clerk of the Municipality of South
Huron.
"I feel really good about the de-
cision," Strang says of her retire-
ment this week after about 26
years experience as a municipal
employee.
Strang started as a part-time
deputy clerk with the former Us -
borne Township in 1982-83, before
becoming full time in 1984 and
eventually becoming the clerk a
few years after that. She remained
with Usborne as clerk -treasurer
and tax collector until amalgama-
tion in 2001, when she became
South Huron s clerk.
Looking back on her career with
the municipality, Strang says she
is leaving on a positive note and is
happy about her decision, which
she reached at the beginning of
the year.
"It s time for a change," she told
the Times -Advocate last week.
"Time to step back."
Strang said she will miss the
people and miss being busy, al-
though she already has plans for
life after municipal work she
intends to do more bookkeep-
ing on the family farm, will do
some volunteering and plans to
spend more time looking after her
grandchildren.
Strang has seen many changes
to her job over the years and she
said government legislation has
intensified over the years, leading
to additional workloads and the

municipalities having to invest
into new technology to keep up
with regulations.
In addition to overseeing the
municipal elections, a clerk s
regular duties are to act as sec-
retary to council and administer
the various government statutes.
Strang also takes minutes at coun-
cil meetings, sets the agendas and
deals with correspondence. There
is also some public relations in-
volved.
Strang said what she enjoyed
most about her job is dealing with
people.
"It s most rewarding when you
can help a person," she says.
Strang adds her job became
more intense after amalgama-
tion the number of meetings
increased and there was a wider
variety of issues to deal with than
what she was used to in Usborne.
Strang credits South Huron s
staff, including former chief ad-
ministrative officer Larry Brown
and current CAO Roy Hardy.
"We ve had excellent staff here
all along," she said, adding she
is pleased with her replacement,
Michael Di Lullo, who joined the
municipality in September as
manager of corporate services /
deputy clerk and who will be-
come clerk after Strang s retire-
ment.
Strang also said she appreciates
the support council has given the
staff over the years.
