WI enjoys catered meal
GRAND BEND A festive Christmas setting greeted
members of the Grand Bend Women s Institute when
they arrived for their December meeting. A delicious
catered turkey meal with all the trimmings was pre-
pared by Pauline Barrett of Centralia. The Women s In-
stitute members enjoyed also the singing of a local Elvis
impersonator. Many memorable songs were enjoyed.
President Cass Lovie chaired the business meeting. A
Ladies Day Out committee was formed. This day will
be held in the spring of 2009. This day will comprise
of an informative , enjoyable and interesting program.
The Winter Carnival committee will organize our float
for the Feb. 14 parade. Monetary donations were made
to South Huron Community Living Dashwood, Agricul-
ture and Water Festival and the Women s Abuse Centre
Goderich. We 11 entertain at the Blue Water Rest Home
in November 2009. A trunk craft show will be given
at the Hensall Queensway Home in February 2009.

Capsule Comments

When a drug company chooses a name for a new
drug, it has to be very careful how the name translates
into different languages. Usually the letters H, J, K and
W are not used to make translation easier. The name
shouldn't be too similar to others already used either. A
good example in Canada is Losec and Lasix which was
allowed, however.
Its important to include enough fibre in our diet each day. The
recommended amount is about 30 grams. Here's how you can do this.
Eat one apple with skin (4 grams); one-half cup of peas (5 grams); 6
asparagus spears (2 grams); 1 & 1/2 cups of cooked whole wheat pasta
(9 grams); 2 slices of whole wheat bread (6 grams); one cup of cooked
oatmeal (4 grams). Total: 30 grams! Not too hard.
Can tonic water help alleviate leg cramps? An 8 oz. (250 mL) glass of
tonic water contains 41 mg of quinine, a drug used against malaria and
sometimes used to treat leg cramps in much higher doses. But some
people say the tonic water does help their cramps. No proof that it will
work for everyone but it won't hurt to try.
During this holiday time, there is a tendency to overindulge with
alcohol. This can spoil an evening and often the whole of the next
day. Avoid problems by alternating a non-alcoholic drink with every
alcoholic drink. Eating a meal before drinking alcohol will slow ab-
sorption and drinking plenty of water before bedtime will help with
rehydration and reduce that yucky feeling the next day.
On behalf of all the staff in our pharmacy, I'd like to wish you all the
very best of the holiday season. Drink responsibly and drive safely.
