ABCA budget passed
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER With almost no dissenting votes, the
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA)
budget was passed Dec. 18 by the ABCA board of
directors.
In a weighted vote, the general levy of the ABCA
passed with only South Huron representative Da-
vid Frayne voting against it.
Before the vote on the project levy, Bluewater rep-
resentative George
Irvin asked ABCA
general manager
Tom Prout about a
proposed $2,000 for
Blue Flag education
in Bluewater and
whether it could be
taken out without
voting against the
budget.
Prout said it could
and the project levy
was then passed in a unanimous weighted vote,
with the overall budget then being passed, also
unanimously.
The initial proposed budget of the ABCA had
started with a 15 per cent increase but after cuts to
several projects the increase in the budget passed
last week was 4.9 per cent.
Among the items impacted by the reduced budget
increase are a reduction in contract staff, summer
students and contractor work as well as projects be-
ing deferred such as natural heritage planning and
updating the ABCA s conservation strategy.
The total proposed 2009 expenditure of the ABCA
is $4,199.428, a decrease of $154,183 or 3.54 per cent
from 2008.
The project levy for 2009 is $257,900, down from
$261,546 in 2008 and down from the initially pro-
posed $335,375, while the general levy is $702,254,
up 7.5 per cent from 2008 s $653,279, and down
from the initial proposed figure of $721,959.
The project levies for 2009 by municipality include
$57,700 for Bluewater, $50,410 for South Huron and
$46,396 for Lambton Shores.
The initial proposed
budget of the ABCA
had started with a 15
per cent increase but
after cuts to several
projects the increase in
the budget passed last
week was 4.9 per cent
