Recent outcomes a mixed bag for SHDHS girls hockey team
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER Lacking their usual goaltender
and starting a replacement with little experi-
ence, the South Huron District High School
(SHDHS) lost 10-2 to St. Mike s Dec. 11.
South Huron coach Heather Strano said in
an e-mail to the T -A her team s usual goalie,
Melissa Cronyn, was ill the day of the match.
Faced with the choice of forfeiting or start-
ing an inexperienced keeper, South Huron
chose the latter.
Ashley Denomme who had never played
net before, according to Strano stepped in to
patrol the crease.
She did pretty good considering the cir-
cumstances [and] made some great saves,
Strano said.
Indeed, the entire South Huron team held its
own in the first period, which ended in a 2-2
tie.
South Huron s Carly Mercer opened the
scoring roughly four and a half minutes into
the game on a goal assisted by her sister Cay -
ley Mercer and forward Keri Reschke.
St. Mike s struck back with 2:28 remaining
before Reschke put South Huron ahead again
with 1:19 remaining.
St. Mike s evened the score 14 seconds later,
then exploded for six goals in the second pe-
riod and added two more goals in the final
frame.
Strano said her team played well except for
a five -to -six -minute stretch in the second pe-
riod that saw four goals surrendered.
The girls stayed
and played strong
despite the situation
they were put in, she
said.
The outcome was
more favourable
Dec.1 against Listow-
el, when South Huron
won 6-1.
Carly Mercer scored
the lone goal of the
first period, denting
the twine with 4:22
gone in the frame.
South Huron for-
ward Laura Godkin
made the score 2-0
mid -way through the
second period while
Mercer added two
more goals before the
end of the frame.
The Panthers added
two more goals in the
third period, includ-
ing one from Carly
Mercer. Listowel for-
ward Laken Smith
scored her team s
only goal in the game,
beating Cronyn with
4:41 remaining.
It was a great
game, said Strano. The girls played very
strong against a team that works hard every

South Huron is scheduled to play today
