Health Unit says flu clinics a success
HURON The Huron County Health Unit is
pleased with the number of people vaccinated at
community clinics over the past month. Over 4,200
residents of Huron County took advantage of the
free clinics in various communities.
Senior public health nurse Christina Taylor says
it s good to see people recognize the importance of
getting their annual flu shot, but they would have
liked to have seen more young people at the clinics.
Not everyone realized that we didn t offer school
flu clinics this year. But it s not too late to get a free
flu shot. People can still get vaccinated at their fam-
ily doctor s office or at the health unit s Health Link
Clinic.
Taylor says it s important that everyone over six
months of age get a flu shot.
People with influenza can easily spread the flu to
those at risk for serious illness. This group includes
babies and young children, the elderly, or anyone
with medical conditions like asthma, kidney disease,
diabetes, cancer or heart problems.
Influenza, commonly called the flu, is a highly con-
tagious viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs. It
causes a sudden fever, sore throat, chills, dry cough,
headache, muscle aches and fatigue. Most people
who get the flu are sick for two to seven days, but
can feel tired and weak for up to two weeks. In some
cases, the cough can last for weeks, too.
The flu can
cause pneumo-
nia and other
complications
that can require
hospitalization.
The bug can
even be fatal.
The flu spreads
easily from per-
son to person
in tiny droplets
from the nose
and throat.
Volunteers needed
EXETER A strong volun-
teer committee can become even
stronger by bringing in new vol-
unteers, said Bob Gehan recently,
who is returning as chairperson
for the 20 anniversary Ausable
Bayfield Conservation (ABCA)
Dinner.
Three years ago the dinner
raised $40,000 for the first time and
last year our watershed donors,
patrons and volunteers helped us
surpass the $50,000 mark for the
first time, Gehan said.
That s an amazing community
success story and it shows what
is possible when everyone rallies
together for a cause.
The conservation dinner com-
mittee is calling for more volun-
teers to help with the gala chari-
table fundraiser held each year
by the ABCA, Exeter Lions Club
and individual community vol-
unteers.
The event supports natural
health and human health through
creation and maintenance of ac-
cessible trails, fish stocking oppor-
tunities for youth, conservation
education and commemorative
woods.
The dinner takes place April 16.
This special anniversary edition
of the gala dinner promises to be
an exciting event and new volun-
teers are welcome to join in the
fun, according to the committee.
To find out about volunteering
on the conservation dinner com-
mittee or to donate items phone

ner.com or abca.on.ca
The conservation dinner has
raised funds over the past 19
years for projects including the
MacNaughton Morrison Section
of the South Huron Trail, an ac-
cessible fishing dock, funding of
$1 for each student attending a
conservation education program,
boardwalks and more.
The dinner includes a live auc-
tion of art and one -of -a -kind spe-
cialty items, a silent auction, spe-
cial raffles and general raffles.
POLICE BRIEFS
Twice the speed limit
SOUTH HURON At approximately 11 a.m. on Dec. 3
a Huron OPP officer was driving south on London Road in
South Huron when he crossed the path of a northbound ve-
hicle travelling at 155 km /h in an 80 km / h zone. The vehicle
was stopped and the driver was charged with his licence
suspended for seven days and his vehicle impounded for
seven days. The incident occurred in the area where two
people lost their lives in the Nov. 17 fatal crash between
a passenger van and a tractor -trailer. The driver has been
charged with one count of racing and he will answer to the
charge in Goderich Provincial Court on Jan. 8.
Swerving driver caught
SOUTH HURON On Dec. 14 at approximately 3 a.m.,
a Huron OPP officer observed a vehicle on Exeter s Main
Street begin swerving and crossing the centre line.
A traffic stop was initiated and the driver displayed signs
of being impaired by alcohol. The driver was arrested for
impaired driving and was taken to the Exeter OPP detach-
ment where he met with a qualified breathalyzer technician
to provide two samples of his breath. The driver complied
and the results confirmed blood alcohol levels of over two
times above the legal limit of 80 milligrams.
As a result of the investigation, the driver will return to
Exeter Court on Feb. 26 to answer to one charge of Impaired
Driving and one charge of Drive with Over 80 Milligrams
