EXETER A celebration was
held at South Huron Hospital
(SHH) Dec. 2 to mark the 100th
anniversary of Victorian Or-
der of Nurses (VON) services
in Huron and Perth counties.
The VON no longer offers
home care nursing in Huron
County but does operate a pal-
liative care volunteer program in
South Huron, and continues to
offer home care in Perth County.
In South Huron, the organiza-
tion s focus is on providing emo-
tional and spiritual support to
patients and their families in the
event of life-threatening illness.
A group of about 20 volunteers
provide this service, which is of-
fered at SHH, Exeter Villa, Zu-
rich s Blue Water Rest Home,
Hensall s Queensway Nurs-
ing and Retirement Home, as
well as the homes of clients.
We feel that we get way more
back than what we give, said
Kim Winbow, a VON bereavement
consultant and the palliative care
program s acting co-ordinator.
The respect and the support
that we as palliative care work-
ers get from the family is very,
very rewarding, she added.
Winbow feels the service offered
through the program is invaluable,
in part because the group tries to
support the person who s sup-
porting the person who s dying.
We take care of the family and
we take care of the patient so
that they can help each other and
spend that time together and go
onto the next stage of their lives
with no regrets, Winbow said.
The palliative care program has
been up and running for about
15 years in the southern part of
Huron County, and has operated
out of SHH for roughly a decade.
Interested parties, including the
program s volunteers, were invit-
ed to take part in an open house
last week in the SHH board room
intended partly to allow oth-
ers to see who we are and who
works with us, Winbow said.
Prior celebrations had been held
during the summer in Perth Coun-
ty, Winbow said, adding, This is
our opportunity in Huron County
to offer a celebration as well.
Winbow made clear the
VON is a not-for-profit agen-
cy and does not charge a fee
for its palliative care services.
We rely on community part-
ners to help us when we have
programs, or in promotion or
referral or sometimes mon-
etary support as well, she said.
Anyone wishing to make a
financial contribution to the
VON can call 519-235-2510.
Insecure yards entered
SOUTH HURON Two
Huron Road West residences had
their unlocked sheds entered
during the night of Dec. 2-3.
Small tools were stolen from one
and a chainsaw was stolen from
the second. Police were able to
confirm by footprints in the snow
that the suspects checked several
sheds in the area and only en-
tered the unlocked buildings.
It is a reminder that thieves
will often take the path of least
resistance. It is clear that given
a choice between a locked shed
and an unlocked shed, the un-
locked one will be entered. Citi-
zens are encouraged to take basic
precautions to protect their prop-
erty and discourage illegal activ-
ity. Anyone with information is
encouraged to call the Huron
OPP at 1-800-310-1122 or CRIME
STOPPERS at 1-800-222-T.I.P.S.
(8477).

Scams running rampant
SOUTH HURON The old saying If it s too
good to be true, it probably is needs to be front
and centre in everyone s mind. Members of the
Huron OPP have received several calls recently
of frauds and scams and citizens need to be wary
of those great deals.
Citizens have reported receiving news of win-
ning the British Lottery, however the winner
needed to send money for the laptop they were
also to receive.
In another fraud, a citizen purchased restaurant
food cards from E -Bay for approximately half
the price of their value. The purchaser verified
the cards were valid prior to sending the seller
money but once the seller got the money, some of
the cards were cancelled via the internet
