Exeter led 1-0 after the first pe- riod and added two more goals in the second period, leading 3-1 after 40 minutes. They added a single goal in the third period and staved off a two -goal charge from Tillson- burg to capture a narrow 4-3 vic- tory. Exeter goals were scored by Tyson Clinton, Nathan Doan (2) and Andrew Mayer. Mohawks goalie Justin Hayter made 41 saves in the contest. It was a huge road win in front of a big Tillsonburg crowd, said Mohawks coach Mark Liver- more. Tillsonburg never gave up and kept pressuring us. They closed with a goal within the last minute and we fortunately hung on. Livermore identified his team s defence and goaltending as particularly strong against Tillsonburg and acknowledged the team needs quality play in those areas to have success. Our penalty killing was ex- cellent, he added. We didn t produce too much on the power play, but defence wins games and we certainly played very good defensively. Though playing with a short bench has been a problem of late for the Mohawks, Livermore said this wasn t a factor in the Dec. 6 game. We were missing maybe a couple of guys, but we had four lines and five [defencemen], he said. We weren t as short as we have been in the past, and it helped out. It didn t burn our players out. Exeter sits seventh in the WOAA s South division, and would easily make the playoffs if the season were to end today. Livermore acknowledged the Mohawks wish they were in bet- ter standing but said momentum heading into the playoffs is what really counts. You don t win championships in October and November, he said. You need that momentum going into the playoffs. Right now we have it, and hopefully we can sustain it. The Mohawks play the Lucan Ilderton Jets Friday at the South Huron Recreation Centre at 8:30 p.m., part of a three -game home stand that will see them play Clinton Saturday and Goderich Dec. 20. Lucan Ilderton Jets grab a pair of victories over Goderich, Clinton By Ben Forrest TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN The Lucan Ilderton Jets captured two victories over the weekend a 6-2 win over God- erich and a win 3-2 over Clinton despite being shorthanded. Only 13 players were iced for both contests, ac- cording to Jets general manager Rob Andrews. Friday against Goderich the Jets led 2-0 after the first period thanks to goals from Darrell Parsons and J.D. McFarlan. The Jets added three more goals in the second pe- riod one each from Jeff Silver, Jaret Peterson and McFarlan. Goderich added one goal of its own in the second period and scored another in the third period. Mc- Farlan notched his third goal of the game before the final buzzer, leaving the score 6-2 in the Jets favour. J.D. had an outstanding game, said Jets gen- eral manager Rob Andrews. His game is all about speed. He was one of the best players on the ice for sure Friday night. Saturday against Clinton the score was tied 1-1 after the first period, with Martin Krayzel scoring the lone Jets goal. Jaret Peterson and Drew Martin added goals in the second period, making the score 3-2. Neither team scored in the third. It was a pretty intense game, said Andrews. They had a full bench and we only had 13 skaters. The referee seemed to want to let everybody play hockey, and it was a good, physical, fast game. Our guys didn t fall into their trap of retaliating and we played a really strong game. Andrews noted the Jets received outstanding Silver Stick qualifier comes to Exeter, Huron Park The puck drops here The South Huron Minor Hockey Association hosted a Silver Stick Regional Qualifier Tournament Dec.5-6 in Exeter and Huron Park. Thirty-two Atom AE and Peewee AE teams from as far away as New Hamburg and Petrolia participated in the event, along with two local Atom teams: the South Huron Sabres and Lucan Irish. Mooretown defeated Ayr 3-2 to capture the tournaments Peewee AE title, while Ilderton fended off Mt. Brydges to capture top honours in the Atom AE division. He made the big saves when we needed [them], and we capitalized on our chances. Andrews noted Krayzel, who is new to the Jets this year and hails from the Czech Republic, also stood out. I think he s finally understanding the Canadi- an game, Andrews said. European hockey is so much different than ours. There s a lot more physi- cal stuff in our game, and he s finally adapting to it. He s a big kid, and he s been able to adjust. I think now he s finally finding his way around the ice and understanding how the coaches want him to play. Andrews considers the Jets next two games to be big ones. They play Friday against Exeter and host Petrolia Saturday evening. Petrolia was undefeated at press time, and An- drews admitted he wouldn t mind handing Petro- lia its first loss. I honestly think we can, he said. The way we ve been playing lately, if they continue that way I think we can give Petrolia all they can handle. They re a big, physical team, but hopefully on the bigger ice [in Lucan] we can utilize our speed and put a loss in their loss column for them. The game takes place 8:30 p.m. at Lucan Commu- nity Memorial Centre.
