Christmas concert a success in spite of the weather

THAMES ROAD - Owing to the bad
weather there was no church service but
the Christmas concert did go on at 4:30
p.m. in the afternoon. At the end of the
concert Kathy Douglas, (Presbytery Youth
Minister living in Blyth) spoke a few
words and then asked grace before we
went downstairs to partake of a delicious
bountiful supper catered by the finance
committee. It was a wonderful afternoon
and evening.
Announcements
Rev. Judith will be away from Jan. 14-30,
2009.
Observer renewals are due shortly and
for new subscriptions contact someone
from the outreach committee.
Thank you to Les Cudmore for donating
our Christmas tree in the sanctuary.
Huron County Christmas Bureau dona-
tions to be dropped off at Exeter Christian
Reform Church between Dec. 8 to Dec. 12.
Dec. 7 and 14 - A Channel at 9:30 a.m.
Bruce Whitmore of the Seaforth area and
others will be telling of their recent experi-
ences in Mozambique.
Dec. 14 - Nominating committee from
Church council to meet following the
church service.
Dec. 24 - Christmas Eve and Communion
service at 7:30 p.m.
Dec. 28 - CLUC service at 11 a.m. at Zion
West. Special music by The Agri Tones .

to Sharon Lynn for the annual report. The
annual meeting will be Feb. 1, 2009 (snow

Thank you to everyone who attended the
concert and to our parents for faithfully
bringing us to practice for our first Thames
Road Elimville Christmas Concert.

sign, Rick Etherington for constructing the
artwork stands, Sheila Hamilton, Melonie
Miller and Virginia Warwick for making
the costumes. Christian Education Com-
mittee (our moms) Jayne Rowcliffe, Karen
Geiger, Erin Parsons and Rebecca Heessels
for making props.
Marilyn Vandenbussche for being the
pianist. Beth Cooper who has practiced
with us since October, so that we could
experience taking part in a church Christ-
mas Concert. Hopefully we will see you
all again next year!
Personals
Doris Elford, Marjorie Johns, Bill and
Rhoda Rohde attended the Christmas
party of the Kirkton Horticulture at the
K.W. Community Centre on Tuesday eve-
ning. Jim and Helen Weston attended the
meeting. A group of four ladies and two
gentlemen plus the lady pianist from Main
St. UC Mitchell sang a lot of songs which
were much enjoyed. Tom Dunbar, River
Line Nature Co., Goderich spoke about
Attracting Birds To Our Backyard which
was very interesting.
There was a mini Christmas flower show
which was quite breathtaking. It
was a very sumptuous pot luck
supper.

White Gift Sunday coming up on Dec. 14

VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA The Varna Crokinole Club met last Tuesday
evening for Doubles Play.
Partners were paired up by drawing cards. Winners were
Ralph Stephenson and Ivan McClymont with 41 points, close
behind with 39 was Abe Leitch and Dave Turner, third was
Charles Reid and Bill Stephenson with 35 and fourth with 32
points was Margaret Hayter and Bill Hearn.
Players will meet Dec. 16 for Singles Play.
The First Sunday of Advent was in Goshen Church Nov 30
with Linda Keys lighting the candle of hope. Worship lead-
er Colin Snyder led in worship with his message being on
Hope and Expectations .
Sympathy goes out to Ruth Johnston and her family on the
passing of her brother-in-law Bruce Johnston.
Special thanks to Don and Debbie Rathwell and her family,
Ralph and Mona Stephenson and Joe Laurie for setting up the
Christmas tree and decorations at the Varna Church.
Varna UCW meets over Christmas
potluck
Twenty-five Varna and Goshen lades met at the home of
Sharon Chuter last Thursday evening for a Christmas Pot-
luck Dinner, Christmas Devotion and social time. Leader
Deb Rathwell welcomed everyone and thanked Sharon for
her hospitality. A warm welcome to Eleanor McAsh (resident
of Queensway Nursing Home) and also to her sister Marj
Stirling. It was Eleanor s birthday so a card was signed for her
and Happy Birthday was sung. Margaret Hayter was lucky
and won the prize for the lucky chair. Heather Snyder won
the prize for the left/right game.
Deb Rathwell read review on the year 2008 , all that Varna
U.C.W had done over the last year.
Margaret Hayter reported that 792 cookbooks are sold to
date and are still on sale.
Deb Rathwell presented Mildred McAsh with her life mem-
bership for the Varna UCW and Mildred s mother-in-law
Eleanor pinned it on her. A short devotion was held with
Christmas carols sung and different readings by Deb Rath -
well, Mildred McAsh, Carol Simons, Marg Robinson and Ger-
aldine Eckel.
There will be no meeting in January. The Varna UCW will
meet again Feb. 5. Once Again thank you to Sharon Chuter for
opening up her home for all the ladies.
The worship service
was cancelled in Varna on
Sunday due to the stormy
weather. Church will be
in Varna next Sun., Dec.
14 and will be White Gift.

Bill and Rhoda Rohde were among the 52
people who went on a Cherry Bus Lines
with driver Daryl and the tour host Harry
Hardy on a trip on Wednesday. We left
Exeter Legion at 9:25 a.m. by County Rd
83 to Mitchell, Newry, Donegal, Britton, To
Highway 86, saw a horse and buggy.
Then through Teviotdale, Varney, Dur-
ham, Chatsworth, Meaford, Rockford,
passed Engels Falls, it is as third as high
as Niagara Falls. Called at the Grey Roots
Museum, lunch at McDonald s and Tim
Hortons near Owen Sound. We then went
to the Roxy Theatre where we really en-
joyed the Forever Young Follies Christ-
mas Show.
We enjoyed our turkey supper at the
Stone Tree Restaurant. Then to Owen
Sound along the Sydenham River, to Har-
rison Park to see the Festival of Northern
Lights which were really spectacular.
Harry Hardy gave a lot of humorous
readings and quizzes as we drove along.
He also put on a Santa Claus hat and mask
and handed out a piece of Christmas cake
to each one on the he bus made by his wife
Jean. Thanks! On the way home it rained,
snowed and rained. We got home safe.
