12 Times -Advocate Wednesday, December 10, 2008 Horticultural Society hosts "Christmas in the Country" KIRKTON The Kirkton Horticultural Society held its annual potluck dinner/ meeting and flower show, Christmas in the Country Dec. 2 at the Kirkton/ Woodham Community Centre. Beautiful seasonal decorations greeted visitors as they entered the foyer and fes- tive aromas established the tone for an evening of entertainment, education and fellowship. Greetings from president Sandra Kemp were extended and all en- joyed a delicious potluck dinner. The Mitchell Main Street United Church Praise Team, with musicians Toni Pol, Larry and Ruth Ann Gray, Rob- ert and Sue Heckman, Lisa Rolph and Mary Jane Runhardt entertained the audi- ence with a selection of seasonal and gos- pel favourites. Director Nancy Dearing thanked the singers and was joined by all in applause. Kemp then introduced featured speaker, Tom Dunbar, a Goderich area resident. As a wildlife biologist, Dunbar has special- ized in protecting birds after oil spills and other environmental mishaps, and has made a study of how to attract birds to back yard feeders. Dunbar noted that as one would expect, the basic requirements of birds are: food, water and shelter, and though these needs aren t complicated, they are specific for different birds. As wind plays a large fac- tor in attracting birds, it is important to keep feeders in protected treed areas. Birds also must drink and bathe, and a water source is needed, even in win- ter. With 600 million song birds elimi- nated every year because of plate glass windows and cats, it is important to help birds achieve their full life expectancy. Dunbar added that though birds pre- fer a natural food source diet, additional feeding is beneficial during stressful times such as winter and the breeding season, adding that year-round feeding is best, but economically, December to June is an excellent time frame. The speaker also clarified the need to provide different types of feeders and perches for the individual requirements of birds, some preferring to face their food, and others needing tail -balancing apparatus to feed well. He suggested that the best bird food should contain a blend of black oil and grey -striped sunflower seeds, safflower, nyjer, canary, canola and red and white millet seeds. The talk White squirrel from the 50s? Squirrel on the roof ExetersAudrey Bentley says she can beat Iry Armstrongs claim that he brought the white squir- rels to Exeter in 1961, as reported in last weeks Times -Advocate. Last week Bentley brought in the above photo to the T -A, which she says was taken in either 1950 or 1951, when she saw a white squirrel on the roof of her house on William Street across from the Hopper Hockey funeral home. Bentley says she knows the picture was taken in the early 1950s because she and her family moved out of the house in 1952. She says it was the first time she had ever seen a white squirrel and called her husband to snap a photo. She said she later told people about the squirrel but they didn t believe her.
