(photo/Scott Nixon) Chamber president to resign By Ben Forrest TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER Hugh McMaster will resign in April as president of the South Huron Chamber of Commerce (COC), citing frus- tration over obstacles to a project that would bring a farmer s market to Exeter. Rumblings that McMaster ruled the COC as a dictatorship also factored into the deci- sion, he said. McMaster hoped to see a farmer s market created in Exeter and has secured funding to do so, he said in an interview last week. According to McMaster, a condition of the funding is that the COC partner with the Exeter Business Association (also known as the BIA) and the Royal Canadian Legion Exeter Branch, on whose property the farm- er s market might be located. The BIA has agreed to participate but has placed a number of conditions on its in- volvement. McMaster believes the conditions are such that the BIA is in effect refusing to take part. It s like a kid that wants to go to the mov- ies and you tell him he has to cut the lawn for a month and do the dishes for a month, McMaster said. The conditions are so strin- gent that really they re saying no. The BIA has requested a detailed plan for the project, including a list of possible sites other than the Legion parking lot, where the COC would prefer the farmer s market be located. Alternate locations include the Parkette See PRESIDENT page 2 i `1 IF TRAVEL ""% INSURANCE Gaiser Kneale 519-23 5-2420 Insurance 1-888-235-2420 Brokers Serving Exeter, Grand Bend, Clinton Oke elected as warden By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER I was surprised and delighted, said South Huron Mayor and new Huron County Warden Ken Oke, who was elected to the position in a secret ballot Dec. 3 in Goderich. Oke said his goal is that everyone in the county works as a team, including taxpayers. It is about workers, staff, department heads, council and the residents of Huron County...and it will take the whole team working together to make 2009 a successful year. Oke, who has been on county council for five years, be- gan his political career by volunteering for local commit- tees for the township of Usborne and later ran as councillor in 1991. He has been a councillor and deputy reeve for Usborne as well as a councillor for South Huron and mayor of South Huron. We have to have better communication with the taxpay- ers, said Oke. One of his immediate priorities, said Oke, will be to de- termine what the council wishes to do regarding the size of county council. I can t make decisions...they tell me what they want to do. Oke added the issue will have to be looked at immedi- ately, since any change will have to be approved by each municipality and the province. With work started on the Huron County budget, Oke said See WARDEN page 2 New role South Huron Mayor Ken Oke, pictured with wife Susan, was elected as the new Huron County Warden last week.
