STRATFORD The South Huron
District High School girls hockey team
recently opened its 2008-2009 season
with consecutive 9-0 victories.
On Nov. 17 the girls headed to Strat-
ford to face Stratford Northwestern
and scored six goals in the first period.
The first came from Keri Reschke
with 11:37 remaining in the frame. The
assist went to Michelle Hall.
Ashley Denomme netted the second
goal of the game roughly three minutes
later, with the assist going to assistant
captain Brett Sararas.
Team captain Carly Mercer scored
with 5:15 remaining in the period with
assists from Keri Reschke and Cayley
Mercer.
Near the end of the period, the South
Huron girls got three insurance goals
in a three minute span.
Lynn Weber, Carley Mercer and Cay -
ley Mercer scored. All three goals were
unassisted.
The Panthers did not look back, scor-
ing three unanswered goals in the sec-
ond period.
Cayley Mercer scored two of these
goals, completing a hat trick.
Keri Reschke was cred-
ited with an assist on the
first goal, while Mercer s
second of the frame went
unassisted.
Jaylene Coates ended the
scoring parade for the Pan-
thers, scoring a goal with
1:04 left in the second pe-
riod.
In the third, neither team
scored, settling the score
at 9-0 score for the visiting
squad.
Melissa Cronyn played
strongly, picking up a shut-
out.
On Nov. 14, South Huron
handed a 9-0 drubbing to
the Goderich District Col-
legiate Institute (GDCI) Vikings.
Ashley Renning opened the scoring
with 9:11 remaining in the first period,
tipping in a shot from the point by
Cayley Mercer.
Roughly a minute later, Lynn Weber
scored on a breakaway, sniping the top
corner of the net.
With 46 seconds remaining in the
frame Carly Mercer scored, making
the score 3-0 for South Huron. Keri Re-
schke and Carley s younger sister Cay -

Carly Mercer and Rescke) and Ashley
Denomme (a short-handed goal, emp-
ty -net goal).

third period, including two from Re-
schke and another from Carly Mercer,
who finished with six points.
All girls played fantastic, said

Irish lose tough game to first -place Mt. Brydges
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN The Lucan Irish
battled first -place Mt. Bry-
dges Nov 28, losing 4-2 in
a game played at the Lucan
Community Memorial Cen-
tre.
I think at times we played
really well and at other times
we didn t play very well,
said Irish coach Russ Morn-
ingstar. It seems like our ef-
fort level is there at times and
other times it s not.
Mt. Brydges scored twice in
the first period and had a 3-0
lead mid -way through the
second frame.
Lucan battled back in the
second period on the strength
of goals from Jeff Boyd and
Tyler Medd. The score was
3-2 heading into the final 20
minutes.
Mt. Brydges had the last
word, however, scoring the
final goal of the game at the
10 -minute mark in the third
period.
Lucan sits in third place in
its conference, well ahead of
fourth -place Exeter and seem
a shoo-in to make the play-
offs.
There is some measure of
confidence in the Irish lock-
er room, but perhaps also a
measure of complacency.
It seems that our guys
sometimes think it s just a
formality, that we just have to
go through the motions until
playoffs come and hope that
doesn t come back to haunt
us, Morningstar said.
We ve still got to make the
playoffs, and you want to be
seeded well too.
Morningstar noted that if
the team finishes third or
fourth, it will play either Mt.
Brydges or the North Mid -
Ringette league scores

of the playoffs.
You re still going to have
a tough opponent in the first
round, he said.
Morningstar said the team
is content to be just over the
.500 mark with roughly half
the season gone. At press
time, they had 10 wins, six
losses and three overtime
losses this season.
I think the second half
of the season, from January
on, is where we really want
to start making our push,
Morningstar said.
Having tough games in the
early going is considered a
blessing rather than a curse.
We d rather have tough
games now and lose with
a good effort ... than have it
easy and not have to work
too hard to get those wins,
Morningstar said.
Morningstar believes that
if anything, the Irish will
continue to improve in the
final half of the season, and
said November is typically a
tough month for any hockey
club.
We re happy if we
can play .500 hockey go-
ing into December and
then slowly get better go-
ing into the [Christmas]
break, he said.
Morningstar added the
goal is to come back and
have a good January and
good February, and be
healthy and kind of peak-
ing at the right time.
The Irish play last -place
Lambeth today (Wednes-
day) at home, after a full
week s rest.
The biggest thing in the
meantime has been re -
focussing, Morningstar
said.
You can t dwell on the
losses. It is what it is. You
can t change it, so it s best
just to forget it, learn from
the little mistakes we had,
and move on.
IF IT ROLLS, FLOATS
OR FLIES... WE CLEAN IT!
