Hawks scorched by the Stars, bounce back against Tavistock
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER The Exeter Hawks were
drubbed 11-3 Friday by the North Mid-
dlesex Stars but bounced back the next
day with a 4-3 win over Tavistock.
Against North Middlesex, the Hawks
led 2-1 after the first period thanks to
goals from Thomas Harnett and Jake Jef-
frey.
The Stars then exploded for six goals
in the second period, adding four more
in the third period.
Jeffrey scored Exeter s lone remaining
goal in the game, finding the net 7:20
into the third period.
Nov. 29 against Tavistock, the game
was tied 1-1 after the first period. Tav-
istock s Mike Davis opened the scoring
but was answered by Exeter s Steve Gin-
gerich on an unassisted goal with rough-
ly 2:30 remaining.
Exeter s Thomas Harnett opened the
scoring in the second period on a goal
assisted by Paul Bowden and Jake Jef-
frey. Tavistock answered back with two
goals, leaving the score 3-2 in Tavistock s
favour after the second period.

Hawks forward Justin Anstett tied the
game roughly eight minutes into the
third period, tying the game at 3-3 and
sending the game into overtime.
Hawks player Scott Muirhead scored
the winner roughly three minutes into
the extra period. The goal was unas-
sisted.
Exeter plays two away games this
week, heading to Thamesford Friday
and Parkhill Saturday for a rematch
against North Middlesex.
Mohawks beat Tavistock, struggle against Lucan and Goderich
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER The Exeter Mohawks beat
the defending champion Tavistock Roy-
als 5-3 Saturday at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre.
The Mohawks got off to a slow start,
surrendering three goals in the first peri-
od and lacked energy according to coach
Mark Livermore.
We were just going through the mo-
tions, he said. It was like a rec league
game out there. We weren t hitting, we
weren t doing the necessary things for
competitive senior hockey, and it showed
after the first.
Exeter managed two quick goals in the
second period, however, bringing the
score to 3-2.
The Mohawks tied the game in the
third period, then took the lead with
about nine minutes left, later adding an
empty net goal to ice the victory.
Livermore noted the Mohawks had a
short bench but persevered in spite of it.
Being shorthanded may have been a
factor in losses earlier in the week against
Lucan and Goderich.
The Mohawks played at Lucan Nov
26, losing 4-3 in overtime. As was the
case against Tavistock the team started
flat, Livermore said.
Exeter trailed 3-0 after the first period
but scored one goal in the second period
and added two more in the third period
to tie the game.
Lucan scored the winning goal with
about 12 seconds remaining in over-
time.
The guys played very hard to battle
back, said Livermore. We ve just got to
get off to a better start.
Livermore added he was pleased with
his team s effort in the game s final 40
minutes, but noted the team had only
three lines and six defencemen during
the game.
Fatigue may have been a factor, he
said.
On Nov. 28 the Mohawks travelled
to Goderich to play the Pirates and lost
6-4.
Exeter led 1-0 after the first period and
4-3 after the second but ran out of gas
in the third period, surrendering three
goals.

ice surfaces and Exeter was again play-
ing with a shorter bench, Livermore
said.
We had a couple of leads during the
game that we just couldn t hang onto,
he said.
Still, he doesn t feel the Mohawks were
overmatched against Goderich.
I believe that we can compete with
any team, but when you re running into
penalty problems and not capitalizing
on power plays, those things come back
to bite you, he said.
Livermore sees plenty of talent when
he looks at his club, noting that when
players show up for games, they want
to play.
They have to start showing the way
I know that they can play and the way
they have played in the past, he said.
We have to keep pressuring the other
team and shutting them down. Every-
one s got to be doing their job out there
on the ice. It trickles down from defence,
goalies, forwards, to coaching.
If we re not playing good then I may
not be doing a good job on the bench,
he added. So we all have to know our
job and do the best we can.
