Local pork competitors at Royal Winter Fair
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HENSALL They re fifth generation
farmers, says pork producer Grant Love
of children Danielle, Deanne and Darren
who recently competed at the Royal Agri-
cultural Winter Fair in Toronto Nov. 6-7.
Also competing at the fair was Scott
Armstrong of Exeter.
Grant and his wife Lauren raise hogs on
Parr Line outside of Hensall.
For the last six years, Danielle, Deanne
and Darren have entered the Ontario ju-
nior barrow compettion at the Winter Fair,
which is open to all boys and girls between
the ages of 10 and 21.
Danielle and Deanne are South Huron
District High School students while Dar-
ren is studing mechnical engineering at
the University of Waterloo.
The Loves placed well in several divisions
at the fair this year which saw 123 entries,
with Darren placing first in the barn com-
petition, fourth in the senior showmanship
division and 14th in the overall show.
Danielle placed 10th in both the senior
showmanship division and most lean yield

as well as 12th in the picture contest.
Deanne placed fifth in the overall show
and in the auction as well as ninth for the
most lean pig and for showmanship, while
Armstrong took eighth in the best dressed
pig picture contest.
The Loves were up at 4 a.m. Nov. 6 to
transport their pigs to the Canadian Na-
tional Exhibition (CNE) grounds, after
which the hogs were washed and weighed
and with the use of an ultrasound, their
back fat and lean muscle were measured,
which went into judging the pigs overall
score.
It reflects what we produce,
says Grant.
The competitors also wrote a
quiz judging their knowledge of
the pork industry.
Friday morning was the show-
manship competition, with the
competitors leading their pigs
around the ring with a cane,
while being asked questions by
the judge on their knowledge of
the entries and cuts of meat.
The Loves use five and a half
month old pigs that are selected
at birth and trained over the sum-
mer.
Danielle said while the pigs get
used to the training quickly, once
in the ring in front of crowds and
photographers, the hogs can get
temperamental.
It kind of throws them...you
smile even when they re stepping
on your foot, she said.

New Habitat executive director
EXETER Habitat for Humanity Huron County (HFH
HC) recently announced the selection of Kevin Morrison as
the organization s new executive director.
HFH HC board chairperson Lois Hayter stated the
board is looking forward to working with Morrison
and the appointment will take the affiliate to the
next level of excellence.
Morrison comes from a business background and
plans to move to Huron County from the London
area.
He stated, When the opportunity came about
to be involved with Habitat for Humanity Huron
County, I jumped at the chance.
The history of this organization is amazing. HFH
HC started as a dream and grew very quickly into a
reality. The most appealing aspect of working here
is the strength and commitment of the network of dedi-
cated volunteers. What this organization has achieved in a
relatively short period of time is a true compliment to what
community is all about. The organization makes a differ-
ence in the lives of so many: the partner family, the volun-
teers and the communities at large within Huron County.
Morrison said he plans to review what has been done
since the inception of the organization and to keep the plans
of building a ReStore in Goderich on track.
Ground breaks for the store no later than the first of May
2009. I know we re going to achieve this goal because I have
already met so many volunteers who believe in all that Hab-
itat stands for.
Morrison s long term goals include continuing to work to-
wards further growth.
Much of our revenue can come from the ReStore so we
must have a profitable store in place. The board of directors
and I look to a future that includes more than one home
build each year and numerous satellite stores in
smaller communities throughout Huron County.
Morrison grew up in southwestern Ontario about
30 miles west of London on a beef farm.
I have over 28 years of diverse business expe-
rience. In 2001, I was approached by a children s
dream fulfillment charity. They were going through
a period of restructuring and thought that my talents
could assist them. Nothing gives me more satisfac-
tion than working with the non-profit sector where
real change
and dif-
ference is
noticeable.
I am really looking for-
ward to the future and
the opportunity to ful-
fill the mission of Habi-
tat for Humanity Huron
County.
Plans are also pro-
ceeding for the build in
Exeter with services ex-
tended to the lot on Wel-
lington Street recently
and in addition, the
Family Selection Com-
mittee is working to se-
lect a partner family for
the Exeter build.

peition was the auction, where the top 30
pigs were auctioned off to companies in
the pork industry which Danielle said is a
way for the companies to support the fu-
ture members of the hog industry.
Lauren said the fair is a chance for the
country to come to the city and it is a
chance for rural people to educate urban
visitors to the fair.
We don t realize how lucky we are to
know where our food comes from, she
says.
