Hawks win firefight against first -place Mt. Brydges
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER The Exeter Hawks came out of
the dressing room fired up for their game Sun-
day against Mt. Brydges, scoring four goals
in the first period and winning the
game 8-7.
It was a victory head coach Jamie
Pearce said might be a turning point
for his club.
They showed a little more emo-
tion than what they ve shown all
year, Pearce said, though he is un-
sure what sparked it.
I think that they re maybe realiz-
ing that they can play with every- Scott Muirh
body, and they re stepping it up,
he said.
Indeed, Pearce mentioned something along
these lines in his pre -game talk
Pearce said he told the team their record is
not an indication of how good a team we are.
The sooner you guys realize that, the quicker
our record s going to turn around.
Exeter led Mt. Brydges 4-1 after the first pe-
riod and 7-6 after the second. The teams each
scored one goal in the third period, making the
final score 8-7 Exeter.
Scott Muirhead had a hat trick in the game,
with one of his goals coming when the team
was short-handed.
Justin Anstett had one goal and three assists,
while Justin Reid, Kurt Van Osch, Jake Jeffrey
and Thomas Harnett each scored once.
Pearce noted Muirhead and An-
stett both stepped up their game a
bit, calling them very key, pivotal
guys.
In order for us to do well, those
are two of many that have to step up
each and every night, he said.
Scotty s just stepping up and do-
ing what we expect Scotty to do ...
Justin Anstett, he s just showing day
in and day out that he s a force to
be reckoned with.
Pearce said Anstett played most of the third
period as a defenceman, giving a nod to the
player s versatility.
The Hawks also played Nov. 20 against Ayr,
losing 5-4 in overtime.
Ayr led 1-0 after the first period and added
another goal mid -way through the second. Ex-
eter s Brandon Dymond then put the Hawks
on the board before Ayr s Joe Abare made the
score 3-1.
Jake Jeffrey and Justin Reid then scored for
the Hawks, tying the game. Exeter s Kenney
ead
Allen scored next on a a power play, but Ayr
answered back with only seconds remaining
in the third period, sending the game to extra
minutes.
Ayr s Adam Kuenzier scored the winning
goal roughly five minutes into overtime.
It was a game Pearce believes
should not have advanced into an
extra frame.
That s one point that we lost, he
said. As a team, we pretty much
gave that one point away.
Still, the team grabbed three out of
a possible four points in those two
games, and Pearce thinks this may
boost the team s confidence head-
ing into a game this Friday against
North Middlesex.
In order for them to do well, this team has to
be a little more confident, he said.
Exeter sits fourth in their division at present
good enough to make the playoffs, though
not good enough for Pearce and not, he be-
lieves, good enough for his players.
Just making the playoffs is not the objec-
tive, Pearce said. When we get into the play-
offs we have to be on a roll, we have to be play-
ing well as a team, and it s something that is
starting slowly to get better and better.

Mohawks split brief home stand against Milverton, Monkton
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER The Exeter Mo-
hawks will not go undefeated in
November as they d hoped.
After beating Monkton 6-5 Fri-
day night, the Mohawks dropped
a 7-5 decision Saturday against
Monkton.
Injuries and the busy Christmas
season may be to blame for the
loss, according to assistant coach
Steve Coward.
It s tough to get guys out, but
they battled hard and played well
with what we had to work with,
he said.
Coward noted the team was
shorthanded Friday against Mil-
verton as well, but was pleased
with the team s effort.
Not too many guys were there,
so with what we had and what we
had to work with, I thought we
did pretty good, he said. We got
the win, anyway.
Exeter led 2-0 after the first pe-
riod, and both teams scored three
goals in the second frame. Milver-
ton outscored the Mohawks 2-1 in
the third period, but Exeter hung
on for the victory.
Brothers Scott
and JR Davies
played well,
scoring three
goals and eight
points between
them.
The two play
on the same
line and tend to
make the play-
ers around them
better, Coward
said.
Scott scored
two goals and
had three assists,
while JR scored
once and had
two assists.
Mark Bell, Tyson Clinton, Jere-
my Geoffrey and Jeff Maclean also
scored in Friday s game.
Exeter had only four defence -
men in both contests, and fatigue
may have been a factor in Satur-
day s game against Monkton, ac-
cording to Coward.
It s tough on the defencemen
when there s only four, he said.
I d say they were getting worn
out by the end of Saturday night s
game. We were up 3-0 at one point.
Monkton had a full bench and we
had a short bench, and we ran out
of gas.
Coward noted Justin Hayter
played well, keeping the team in
the game and playing without a
backup
Coward said the Mohawks
London Line, made up of Lon-
doners Tyson Clinton, Andrew
Carey and Nathan Doan, also
played well.
They put forth a good effort ev-
ery night whether it s a big team
or a weaker team, they come ready
to play, Coward said.
The Mohawk play tonight
(Wednesday) in Lucan then Fri-
day in Goderich. They will face

Jets beat
defending
champions
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
ILDERTON The Lucan-
llderton Jets beat the defending
champion Tavistock Royals 9-7
Saturday in Ilderton.
It wasn t a pretty game but it
was a spectator game, said Jets
general manager Rob Andrews.
Both teams seemed to show their
offensive power but not too much
defensive work.
From a fan s standpoint it was
a great game they saw 16 goals
and even a couple of fights.
The Jets led 5-2 after the first
period, thanks to two goals from
J.D. McFarlan, and one goal each
from Jeff Cook, Dan Crowley and
Joe Pikul.
After the second period the Jets
led 8-7. Pikul scored his second
goal of the game, while Drew Belt
and Todd Hunt also scored.
McFarlan scored an empty net
goal in the third period, bringing
the tally to 9-7 in the Jets favour.
To beat a team like Tavistock
is big any time, Andrews said.
They re one of the teams that are
ahead of us. They re the defend-
ing champions. The guys were
pretty excited. A win s a win.
The Jets have two significant
home games this week, facing Ex-
eter on Wednesday and Tillson-
burg on Saturday night. Both
games will take place in Lucan.
We re hitting that stretch of
hockey now where we have a few
home games back to back. Hope-
fully that will help us out, An-
drews said.
The Jets played the majority of
their early schedule on the road
in order to build team chemistry.
They sat in sixth place at press
time, something Andrews finds
encouraging.
If you come out of that at .500,
that s good, he said. You know
teams are going to play you aw-
ful tough in their arenas, and if
you can have a .500 record on the
road, hopefully being back home
in the friendly confines of Lucan
will help us out.
