Adopt a Family this Christmas Flood control
The Christmas spirit A new initiative this year from Big Brothers Big
Sisters of South Huron can allow you to Adopt a Family this Christmas season
by buying Christmas gifts for those in need.A Christmas tree has been placed in
the Exeter Library. On the back of the ornaments are names of the 32 families
associated with the local Big Brothers Big Sisters. Those interested can take an
ornament, buy a gift for the family and drop off the gift to the library or the Big
Brothers Big Sisters office at 146 Main St. in Dashwood. Participants are also
asked to return the ornament to ensure the gift goes to the correct family. Case-
work co-ordinator Amy Schwartzentruber said toys and games are needed for
children. She also encourages local businesses to get involved in Adopt a Family.
Checking out the tree last week were library patrons Jeremy Tucker, left, Maddox
Keller and Ryan Gibbings with Schwartzentruber. Big Brothers Big Sisters is asking
that all gifts be in by Dec. 15 so they can be distributed to the families in time for
Christmas. (photo/Scott Nixon)

SOUTH HURON Councillors received an update Nov.
17 on a proposed storm sewer project for the east end of
Exeter to improve the town s problems with flooding.
Engineer Bill Dietrich spoke at the South Huron council
meeting, explaining two options for the eastern portion of
Exeter that will see surface water diverted to the Ausable
River during rain storms.
The first option, Dietrich explained, involves a 1.2 kilome-
tre storm sewer between Huron Street East and the Ausable
River. The project will include berms and surface inlets into
stormwater pipes.
He said the drain will travel either west of Ironwood Golf
Course or down the 12th fairway.
The second option involves smaller pipes but includes two
retention ponds that will hold water during rainstorms. The
ponds will be on private property and will be connected to
the storm sewer system.
Dietrich said both options are designed to handle 100 -year
storm events.
He added he hasn t reviewed the plans with the affected
property owners yet. The next step is to hold public meet-
ings.
Answering a question from Deputy Mayor George Rob-
ertson, Dietrich said under the Drainage Act the retention
ponds can be put on private property. He also added the
options are for existing drainage conditions; with future
development, modifications will have to be made to the
system.
Dietrich said he anticipates preliminary meetings on the
project by the end of this year, followed by a final report in
the new year, with a bylaw passed in the construction.
If there are no delays, construction could go ahead next
summer.
Mayor Ken Oke asked if the drainage inlets would be pro-
tected from corn stalks. Dietrich said that is something that
has to be considered and the inlets will need some type of
grid system to prevent them from getting clogged up.
"I like what I see," Oke said. "I guess what we have to do
is proceed."

vation Authority is propos-
ing a 4.96 per cent increase in

The board passed draft ap-
proval of the budget at the

per cent increase after cut-
ting a proposed expense on
an all -terrain vehicle (ATV)
project which would have
cost a total of $20,000. The
