Exeter Mohawks g round Lucan-Ilderton Jets
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER The Exeter Mohawks were
winless in October but hope to be unde-
feated in November. So far, so good.
The Mohawks faced the Lucan Ilderton
Jets in Exeter on Nov. 15, winning 5-2 and
posting their second win this month.
Exeter jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the
first period, but was shut out in the second
frame. The Jets scored one goal in the sec-
ond period and added another in the third,
but Exeter added two goals of their own
before the game was over.
Exeter goals were scored by Shaun Clin-
ton, JR Davies, Jeremy Jeffrey, Greg Schep-
ers and Jeremy Vanbergen.
Lucan-Ilderton s goals were scored by
Ryan Fletcher and Kyle Smith. Exeter goal-
ie Cam Becker made 27 saves in the game.
We probably had our best lineup of the
year out there, and it seems like things are
starting to click, said Mohawks assistant
coach Steve Coward.
We had four full lines, and the guys
were looking to produce with us. It was
nice to get a full roster and the right mix of
guys as well.
Coward noted that not all players can
make it out to road games, but that ev-
eryone was on board for Saturday s home
game.
Our first line was really clicking well to-
gether, he said. The three of them were
playing well and got us lots of points.
Coward said he was pleased with the ef-
fort of all 20 Exeter players, suggesting the
game was an important one.
We needed the win, he said. It was a
big game, and hopefully we re heading in
the right direction.
Jets general manager Rob Andrews was
less enthused about his team s perfor-
mance.
We came out flat, he said. Our goal-
tending was a little shaky to start with.
We didn t seem to catch any breaks off the
bat.
He gave full credit to Exeter, however,
saying They did things right, their goal -
tender played very well. They seemed to
be able to get the puck out of their own
end.
Andrews feels his squad outplayed the
Mohawks, but struggled to find the net.
Though losing isn t pleasant, Andrews
said he wasn t frustrated by the game.
We want to finish in the top eight
teams, he said. That s our goal ... and
so far we re meeting that goal. It s tough
when you lose, but you only get better by
experiencing games like we had the other
night.
Ron Ferguson Memorial Tournament
Ring masters Exeter and Hensall hosted the Ron Ferguson Memorial Ringette

:ook part in the event, and Exeter came away with four medals. The Exeter Novice

first period against the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. (Photo/Ben Forrest)
He noted the Jets seem to play in spurts
and need to put together a full 60 minutes
of play.
If things aren t going our way and all of
a sudden we get behind, we haven t been
able to dig out and get back into it, he
said.
That comes with experience and play-
ing more games. You re upset when you
lose, but you know what? You can t af-
ford to make mistakes against good teams
like that or they re going to make you pay,

hard fought and sometimes unneces-
sarily chirpy game by both teams.
This was our girls toughest test
and full marks to Forest White for not
giving up and making the girls work
hard for the win. Our girls finished
strong and showed great passing
skills throughout the game.

Hanover was definitely the strong
team of the group. They jumped out
to a three goal lead after the first peri-
od. Our girls hung in and you could
see their confidence growing as the
game went on. They got one back
two minutes into the second period

33 seconds to go in the game. A great
effort and more importantly a really
strong challenge for the girls who
should be proud of their effort.

Strong final game by the girls to

This weekend the Exeter Bunnies
played in the Exeter Ringette tour-
nament. These were also their first
games of the season. They played
two games on Saturday, facing off
against both of the teams from For-
est. The girls really did well and tried
so hard. They didn t come up with
a win but played two good games
that were very close at times. For a
lot of the first year players this was
their first game experience and they
should be very proud of themselves
for getting out there and trying their
best. Way to go, girls!
