Capsule Comments
by Ernie Miatello
Flu is more prevalent at this time of year because the
virus spreads more readily at lower temperatures and
lower relative humidity. The virus seems to be more
stable in cool, dry air and this air also creates more
mucus in our noses, in which the virus loves to make its
home then spread to our lungs.
Dry skin is a problem for many people this time of year. Lukewarm
baths or showers are better than hot ones. Using a moisturizing cream
afterwards is important to replace the skin oils removed by the bathing.
Also ensure the humidity in your house is high enough. The flu virus
won't like that.
Breastfeeding is good for both baby and mother. Breast milk can be
stored for us to five days in the main part of the fridge (at 4 degrees C or
lower). It will keep well up to two weeks in the fridge freezer and up to
six months in a regular freezer.
Last year, a cough study was done with children between the ages
of 2 and 18. They were divided into three groups. One group was given
honey, a second group given "DM" cough suppressant and a third
group a placebo (no medication). Honey fared very well for this age
group. Honey is a good choice to try first when your child has a cough
due to a cold.
It can be mind-boggling to try to make sense out of all the cough and
cold remedies that are on the market. If the honey suggestion doesn't
work, we will be glad to advise you on the right choice for your child.
