Jets sputter in game against Petrolia
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
PETROLIA If it wasn t for
a couple of bad bounces and a
hot goaltender, we would have
won.
So says Lucan-Ilderton Jets gen-
eral manager Rob Andrews about
his team s 4-3 loss Nov 7 at Petro-
lia.
It was a really good game,
Andrews added. We went into
Petrolia with 15 skaters, which
was a little short-staffed. We had
to move some forwards back on
defence, but everybody stepped
up.
You go in to play a one -goal
away game, and that s what you
hope for a break.
The Jets led 3-2 after the first
period thanks to goals from Scott
Mezenberg, Jaret Petersen and
Todd Hunt.
With a minute left in the sec-
ond period, a Jets defenceman
was clearing the puck when it
deflected off the stick of a Petrolia
player and found its way into the
Jets net.
That was the tying goal, said
Andrews, which sort of deflated
the boys a little bit, because they d
been playing so well.
At about the second minute of
the third period, Petrolia dumped
the puck into Lucan-Ilderton s
end, and the Jets goalie came out
to play it.
The puck took a funny bounce
off the boards and came out to a
player who placed it in an open
net.
They beat us ... but overall it
was a really good game, said An-
drews, noting defenseman Ryan
Fletcher played an outstanding
game, picking up three assists.
The guys stepped up, being
that we were short, and they all
played really well, Andrews
said.
Petrolia s a good team. They re
one of the top teams in the league.
They re undefeated. We went in
there and played them as hard
as we could and I think if we get
them on a bigger ice surface it
could make a difference.
They were able to neutralize
our speed a little bit, and they took
quite a few penalties because they
were trying to slow us down.
The Jets play in Exeter Satur-
day night against the Exeter Mo-
hawks, and Andrews anticipates
a good battle between the rival
teams.
Exeter always seems to ice
a very good team, he said.
They ve got good coaching, (and
good) management.
They always go out and recruit
some pretty good players to come
in and by checking their roster it
looks like they ve done that again
this year.
Being that we re so close to
each other, usually the games at-
tract fans from each centre, and
it s a really friendly rivalry, he
said.
All the guys seem to know
each other, and it s a good rivalry
to have.
